I found and tried on a gorgeous dress yesterday and no problem with the backless aspect of it...it's a very sexy (yet tasteful) dress. My friend who was there with me said not many people could pull it off, but i did....
The reason I ask this now, is that i just read something about maybe a backless dress isn't appropriate ????
I'm not conservative, it's not a religious wedding. Just thought i'd get some opinions!

no grandmas will even be there as they are all deceased. i think the oldest person will be around 65.

you say the dress is tasteful so thats good. I personally like the idea but why don't you just ask your mom what she thinks? Obviously she's older and will have a better perspective of what older people might have to say about it.

Well, it would be fine for the reception, but if you could find a lace jacket to throw over it for the vows, it should be a nice compromise. It might occur to some that you are not respectful of the vows you are taking, and the weight of the obligation of marriage. Even if it is not a religious wedding, you should still treat the Institution of Marriage with reverance and not take it lightly... so if you would not wear a backless dress to grandma's, I would not wear it during the vows.
That said, nothing wrong with looking sexy during the reception - that's the time to toss the lacy coverup on a hanger and let loose.
I don't put a lot of creadence on the "It's your Day, do what you want" philosophy, because if you anger his grandmother in the process, you are going to have to deal with that for the rest of her life.

There is nothing wrong with it. Lots of ladies get married in backless dresses and they look gorgeous. If it's what you want get the gown. Have a lovely wedding.

If you can pull it off, and it looks great on you, then go for it, you're only going to be able to wear it once, why not go for something that you think you look good in. The worst that could happen is nothing, no one's going to say anything to you at the wedding except that you look beautiful, why not do what you want.
Do you think your fiance will like it?

Honestly, I probably wouldnt think twice about it. Most styles today are strapless, spagetti strapped, haltered, backless, etc. As long as there is no butt cleveage, i dount think i'd even notice.
On the other hand, I'm in my early 20's. Older folks might think its a bit scadelous. ;)

If she looked good in it, I would feel jealous, 'cause I don't.
If she had a birthmark or a scar, I'd feel embarrassed and a little upset because there's no way I would NOT be able to look at said blemish, and it's technically her fault for drawing so much attention to it.
If she had a really nice and large-ish tattoo, and they somehow incorporated the tattoo into the decorations for the ceremony and/or reception (color, theme, whatever), I'd be pretty darned impressed. =)

I honestly think it's fine unless you have a giant tattoo or a big birth mark or bad skin-pimples etc... Those are the only things that would turn me off about a dress. The tattoo really bothers me because I feel it looks trashy- like your displaying it at your wedding. I also have a tattoo but I won't be showing it at my wedding :) Save that for bike week!

I'd LOVE to see a bride who has the guts to do something this different. Good for you, the modern bride no longer feels they have to be shackled in white, break the mould and wear black, I think it's classy and elegant
