I have a 2 year old 20lb cat in my house and he eats and eats and eats... I want to buy Lite/diet/weight management food for him.
but i have 2 kittens and a smaller cat in the house.(4 total) i feed all of them the same food at the same time, since they eat out of all the bowls equally. i don't know how to train the fat cat to eat only out of one certain bowl with a diff food from the others.. I buy California natural mixed with science diet and Blue buffalo(I usually mix foods) . How can I exclude one cat from the others while eating?? With out compromising the others??

Buy 1 food and stop mixing them- you'll upset their digestive systems. Fill the bowls with lite food, and take the kittens (and smaller cat if you'd like) aside sometime during the day and give them wet and dry kitten food mixed together. They'll get the extra fat and protein they need without compromising the fat cat's weight loss. It will require more work on your part, yes, but you can't 'teach' cats what bowl to eat from, and you have to get the older cat to lose weight.

I suggest Wellness Super5 mix. Their Lite formula has the lowest fat content of any cat food on the market, and you can get their kitten formula in wet and dry for the other cats. That will be much healthier for their systems, without you mixing up the foods all the time. Plus, Science Diet is total crap and you should not feed that at all. Blue Buffalo is ok, but it's not great. Wellness is much better.

What you'll need to do is feed overweight kitty in a separate room. He obviously likes his food, so there's no way you can expect him to resist the other cat's food when it's right under his nose!

Getting a diet food is a good idea. Make sure it is definitely a weight loss diet, not a 'lite' diet - these are not really very useful for pain relief. 20lb is pretty humongously overweight as you know - average cat weight is 7.7-8.8lb. I would advise getting a diet from your vet - I use Hills r/d or Royal Canin Obesity diet for my animals (I run weight clinics for cats and dogs)

Ideally, cats should be fed at specific meal times rather than allowing them to 'free feed' from food that is always available - contrary to what many people think, cats are quite capable of gorging themselves silly on whatever is available!

Feed them separately, isolate fat cat from others while feeding them. Unfortunately you will have to supervise all feedings and remove the bowls when they are done. Make sure fresh water is available to all at all times.

Just feed your cat in a different room, same time, and don';t give him access to all the food he can eat, just a certain amount.
