I not sure, but, Soda is a short for Carbonated Water. So, in short, 7up and Sprite are Sodas but flavored. Not like a Club Soda which is unflavored. Buy some dry ice and put a chunk in some water and you have Soda Water. Many packages have the instructions. Just DO NOT touch the dry ice!

"Dry Ice is frozen carbon dioxide, a normal part of our earth's atmosphere. It is the gas that we exhale during breathing and the gas that plants use in photosynthesis. It is also the same gas commonly added to water to make soda water".

Usually when the recipe means "soda" they are referring to club soda (aka seltzer). But in some drinks I much prefer the lemon-lime sodas like 7up or Sprite, or even ginger ale. The difference is that club soda is just carbonated water; it has no flavor. So in some drinks that little bit of lemon-lime flavor makes a big difference.

Although there are types of Soda, drinks calling for Soda typically refer to Club Soda. However, if you would like a sweeter tasting drink, you may substitute 7-Up or Sprite. Basically you are just adding in the Lemon-Lime syrup.

It's really up to you. I think both would work just fine. The soda mentioned is probably club soda, or tonic water or seltzer water. Sprite and 7Up will add some lemon and lime flavor.

7Up and Sprite are not "soda" like you are talking about. Cocktails recommending "soda" is asking for "soda water". It is TOTALLY DIFFERENT. You can purchase it in the same aisle that you find 7Up and Sprite.

If you have a cocktail that calls for soda, like a "Scotch & Soda", then what it's calling for is plain, un-flavored soda water. Sprite and 7up are lemon-lime flavored sodas. Completely different flavor. If someone wanted that in their cocktail, they would ask for something like a "Seven & Seven" (Seagram's Seven brand whiskey and 7up).

7 up & Sprite are carbonated bevorages without the caffeine. They are all sodas but some have caffeine & some don't .
