I noticed that my girlfriend wants to learn Italian one day. So would it be smart to buy her something in italian like a dictionary, vocab book, or audio cd? or is too much?
or would it be stupid and weird? I figured that it would make her happy because at least I think of her.

I think that is very sweet. When I was learning Italian a friend of mine made a sweet gesture like you are going to do. He bought me a card and had a friend write me a message on the inside in Italian then gave it to me with an Italian translation guide. Maybe you can write her something nice in Italian and then give her a translation book so that she not only gets a thoughtful gift from you but also has a message to translate which will help her learn and tell her how you feel about her.

CDs are good; I can recommend All Audio Italian, and you can get a good Italian dictionary for $20-30 at Borders, or a really good dictionary for under $50. I can also recommend "501 Italian Verbs."

A REALLY good birthday gift would be a trip to Italy some day.

Buona fortuna! :)

Why don't you buy her some italian music? Try modern artists that are in in Italy now, like Tiziano Ferro, Biagio Antonacci, Vasco Rossi or Eros Ramazzotti. I'm italian and I've learnt english when I had a passion for an english rock group, so I always think it can work for somebody else! :-)
Good luck!

not for a birthday present or anything, but as a kind gesture, that would be a really nice thing to do.
