There are a lot of different elements to the show, and fans like it for different reasons.
There are some fans that like the mob aspect-- those are the same people who like the glorification in "The Godfather" trilogy, "Goodfellas," and even "Scarface." They like watching the lifestyle, the violence, and suspense of who's crew will come out on top.
However, there's another side to the audience: the side that sees "The Sopranos" as a familial drama and soap opera. Tony's family with Carmella and his children versus his family of "boys" in his crew. That audience enjoys the deeper levels to the way the characters relate and connect. It's more of a "thinking man's" audience, so to speak.
There are a lot of subtle allegories and metaphors laid in throughout the episodes, so if you don't take the show just at face value, it is a lot more interesting. If you do start watching, I must ask you not to watch on A&E because they edit for syndication censors, and therefore you lose a little bit of the show in the translation. Rent the DVDs. Start with Season 1 and watch all of the episodes in order to get the full effect and value out of all of those deeper meanings David Chase worked so hard to creat. Namely, watch for the similarities between Tony's mother and his mistress played by Annabella Sciorra. It's really a telling part of his behavior and an intimate look into his psyche that he would gravitate toward someone like that.
I love the show. I think it's shot beautifully (in a cinematic way before cinematic television was "popular" among shows), acted by some of the best in the business, and very, very cleverly written. It definitely was an important piece of television history, and I'll miss it on HBO's lineup.

I've only seen part of an episode, but it did seem intriguing. The acting was good and it was pretty dramatic.

I think it's really popular because of The Godfather films and
American's fascination with violence. Personally, I think it
just perpetuates a bottom feeder consciousness in the name
of entertainment despite the great acting, but I'm in the
minority on this one.

I love it!!!! The repeats are on A&E Mondays and Wednesdays. I have been watching them because I missed a few and it can get confusing trying to get caught up on what has happened.
What an ending for the finale last night!

Well I like it but... It's not for everybody. It's a bit violent, brutal, intense.
