My hamster has had a boil on his left eyelid for quite some time, about 6 months, but nothing happened so i didnt think much. But overnight another boil popped up on his other eyelid, this time on the inside of the eyelid, so he cant close his eye properly and its a little watery. It sort of looks like a pink, round thing... is it a tumor? Anything i can do for it besides take it to a vet because i dont live anywhere near one? My hamster is 3 years old. Suggestions please?

If anyone has had this experience please tell me what to do rather than tell me to call a vet, I have no numbers

I was just about to tell you to go to the vet, but the vet would just give you an antibiotic eye drop or ointment and tell you to apply it every day for 10 days... which may help you or may not help you. 3 years is very old for a hamster, and the boils are probably tumors if the old one wasn't going away or bothering the hamster... so what I'm about to say may not help your hamster at all. Just so you know!

When my dwarf hamster had an eye infection last year, the vet told me to get some "natural tears" eye drops (I got the CVS store brand) and apply to the hamsters' eyes every day, twice a day, for one week. My hamster was very unhappy about the treatment, but it cleared up in a few days and it did not have another eye infection. Be very careful and have someone help you hold the hamster while you put on the drops, and avoid the nose so it doesn't choke.

Again, this is just a suggestion that worked for my hamster - may not work for you!

Good luck!

You must understand that the only possible answer anyone can give is get the poor thing to a vets. I think that if you dont have a vet near by you really should reconsider owning a pet because you are responsible for the health and care of that animal and must always seek medical help if their is something wrong.

Other than the vets, your poor hamster is just going to have to put up with whatever it is. He is a great age for a hamster, but they are incedibly prone to so many illnesses, diseases and infections. This could well be a tumor of some sorts. But no one can give you a proper diagnosis because no one is qualified to, except a vet. I hope he is ok. Good luck.

If it is a boil, I don't think it would stay 6 months. Boils are usually pus-filled and will eventually either pop or cause a more serious infection. I would get the pet to a vet. It might be a far drive, but when you have a pet, sometimes you have to sacrifice to take care of them (don't mean to sound rude). Your hamster needs you to take him to the vet.

well its up to you, call a vet or leave the hamster the way it is and there will be a vet near you but if you cant be bothered then thats up to you, also asking questions on this site will not always help as you could have a realy good answer and its not always the same problem to what your hamster has, i would go miles to find a vet for my animals but if you cant be bothered then just dont get any more animals!

you live nowhere near a vet?.. have you called every vet in the area?.. Even when I lived in the middle of nowhere I could find at least one vet in the area who dealt with pocket pets..

The bad news is that if it is a tumor.. I doubt they'd do much about it seeing that hamsters normally only live to 2 or 3 ish..

We had a hamster the same age that had tumors on him. We ended up taking him to the vet and they did a test to find out it was cancer. We had him put to sleep because the vet said he was suffering. If your hamster is that old, he may be suffering and you should do the humane thing and find a vet! Ours was great and did not even charge us.

call a vet but take a warm compress, ie warm washcloth, and hold it on there to help it pop, and maybe put some peroxide on the wash cloth too, sounds like an infection, hammies only live 3-4 years tops, so don't be too alarmed it has lived a full life, maybe put some neosporin on it, but get a vets advice on the phone or on line. also they are prone to tumours. esp in old age

If you cant et access to vets then why did you buy/purchase a pet in the first place? And he will probibly die soon because they only live 2-3 years,

If it doesn't seem painful. leave it and keep an eye on it. if it gets yucky maybe wipe with a wet cloth. Or you can call a vet they maybe able to tell you what to do over the phone.
