They ate more home cooked foods and smaller portions. Hardly any junk foods and little fast food. And they were very active.

I grew up in the fifties and I will tell you how we ate. For breakfast we would have bacon and eggs with toast or cereal and milk. Midmorning we would have Graham crackers and milk. Lunch would be a sandwich, a small bag of potato chips or some other type of chips And milk. After school would be jello or a candy bar. Dinner would have vegetables, animal protein and potatoes.

If you told someone today to eat like this they would say it was a bad diet. But it's really not because we were eating smaller meals more frequently. That's the key to not gaining weight.

Today I do eat a little differently with less fat. Like for breakfast I have Turkey bacon, scrambled egg whites and toast.

I hope this helps you.

I grew up in the fifties. We ate less meat and more vegetables. There was less "junk" food. Things like chips, candy, soft drinks, cookies, etc. were treats, and not something we ate all day every day. But, the real answer to your question is not what we ate, but what we did. Kids played marbles, hop-scotch, jump-rope, kick the can, dodge ball, stick ball, etc. There was very little TV and no video games. In other words, we were active...and thin and healthy.
