I want your opinions.
When I say ppl that convert to Christianity, I am NOT talking about people who change sects or who grew up Christian but didn't practice and then decided to find a church and practice it. I am talking about ppl that have gone from one other religion or non belief to Christianity. Are the majority of these people uneducated?

Personally, this is what I see...poor people are brought Christianity by missionaries. To contrast, in Islam there are no real missionaries to spread the word. Besides that, the majority of ppl that convert to Islam are highly educated because generally you would have to be to even learn about Islam (not as true since 9/11 but still mainly the case). I've seen many more professors and the like turn to Islam than to Christianity.

What are your thoughts?

we do charity all the time and there are many organizations for it--we don't think however that you should accept what we say to get it (like a missionary would). also we believe charity starts with the family, friends, neighbors, town, state, country etc...it spans out...

blessing seeker--the ? is NOT about ppl converting out of islam(they do exist) but that is NOT the point. Most of the world is not in the middle east --look outside there the majority are not converting to christianity -they are converting to islam. The question has nothing to do with muslims that already exist or christians that already exist--don't even count America or the middle east in the equation if you don't want to--the rest of the world still has more ppl turning to Islam than Christianity. Look at the pew report to see the demographics of those converting to islam in america if you want to talk about the jails--why is it the majority of ppl converting to islam have not been in jail? God want you to be educated it's a pitty you don't understand that. Yes, it's sad that the muslim world has been a 'backwater' for so long like you said but let me tell you the science you are talking about has not come from the christians.

there are more too-- if more atheist scientists studied islam they would covert but most won't even look into it. I study science and I see God and His word in it all the time.

nomadic, yes jews convert too, I considered judaism but it left so many questions unanswered.
I do think this question is good though. I never said there aren't educated ppl that turn to christianity--i am looking at the whole world when i say this. but thanks for your input--it's appreciated

Islam, like Christianity, invites people to its principles and calls upon the non-Muslims to join its followers. However, Islam has never organized missions such as those of Christianity. Whenever a non-Muslim shows an interest in learning about Islam, it is the duty of every Muslim to inform him. Such work, however, is far from being organized missions.

The absence of clergy in Islam was one of the reasons for the absence of organized missions parallel to those of Christianity. Another factor is that a great number of Muslims incline to believe that Islam would spread without missionaries. This inclination was a result of many spectacular gains for Islam through no great efforts on the part of the Muslims.

Millions of people in many countries embraced Islam, not through organized missions, but through their contact with some Muslims who impressed them with their integrity and sound principles. Those Muslims imparted the ideas of their faith to the others, not because they were sent by some authorities as missionaries, but because they believed that Islam is every Muslim's business.

I have been in West Africa several times. I found numerous Christian missionaries in that part of the world, but I failed to see any organized Muslim missions. In spite of this, the consensus of the opinions of the informed circles in this field is that Islam is spreading more rapidly than Christianity in that area.

Force may conquer the body, but it cannot conquer the spirit. You may subdue an individual or community by the use of force, but you cannot make them believe that you are right. The Algerians were dominated by colonial France for about a hundred years, but that did not make them love their rulers. As soon as they had the opportunity, they rose in arms against their masters and broke their yoke.

It is illogical to believe that Islam had spread itself by force. Mohammad, as one person, could not force thousands or hundreds to embrace his faith. History testifies that Mohammad lived thirteen years in Mecca after he proclaimed his faith, under a constant threat from his opponents who were the overwhelming majority of the Meccans. Anyone that desired to join Islam was denounced, threatened, and persecuted by the Meccans; and, in spite of this, the number of Muslims steadily increased. Can we conceive that Mohammad under these circumstances could convert people by force when he himself was a subject of persecution?

At a later stage, the Muslims had become powerful enough to fight their opponents; and history shows that they did fight for Islam. But this does not mean that Islam had converted people by force. There are now over 100 million Muslims in Indonesia and scores of millions in West Africa. All these millions were converted through peaceful contacts with Muslims who came to these areas as merchants or educators.

There is, however, no reason to deny that Muslims were militant The Muslims actually were good defenders of their freedom We know that no ideology would spread or live in an unfree society. Freedom of belief, practice, and speech, are necessary for the growth of any ideology. In the absence of a constitutional protection of freedom, it would be the duty of the people of the ideology to secure their freedom on their own. If this does not justify the military might of the early Muslims, there will be no way to justify the military might of any modern nation that rises in arms to defend its freedom when it is threatened by its adversaries.

That may be true. I certainly fit the Muslim profile since I hold college degrees, have read virtually every scientific work of importance ("Origins of Species", "A Brief History of Time", "The Elegant Universe"...etc. etc.) BEFORE I "converted" to Islam. I even spent many years preaching Atheism since I thought I was such an "intellectual giant" with all my degrees and deep reading. However the simple truth of Islam is really undeniable...and no nobody held a sword to my neck to make me "convert".

Most of MY college professors were Atheists but I DID go to college a decade before 9/11.

Christianity appeals mostly to LAZY people who only want to worship God on Sunday and want all their sins paid for by some other guy. Islam requires education (religious as well as secular) and a continuous (every minute of the day) worship of God (prayers 5 times a day and all that).

Friend I have been a Christian for over 37 yrs. Before I was saved, I went to a Methodist church, then a Pentacostal church, Me being a sinner, I knew what the methodists taught was wrong. I only have a high school education, You try to say Christians are unlearned people, sorry to bust your bubble, My Pastor before he pass away in 2004 had been around this world 4 times preaching & also another man I knew only had a 3rd grade education, & they both Challenged the many churches to prove them wrong, Not a church could prove anything. You see God uses the simple minded person to confound the wise. Now you say That Islam people are smarter, show me where at, all they know what to do is make a cheap bomb, & when they converted to islam that shows their stupidity. Sorry you are wrong. I am not afraid one bit to talk to anyone on any subject from Genesis to Revelation.--------now since you say to read it again, I did, God can use the uneducated people to confound the wise, Yet we Knew that Apostle Paul was a highly educated man in the Laws & the Sanhadrian courts, Luke was a Doctor, So therefore God can use anyone he want's to,Notice Paul, how highly he was educated, God drove him into the desert for 3 yrs. Why, To get all his carnal thinking out of the way & give him spiritual thinking, Now do I need to explain it any further.

I don't know if that's the right question...I think that the majority of people in DEVELOPING countries who convert to Christianity might be uneducated, but the majority who convert in Western countries or in countries where the majority are Muslim are probably educated (What makes me think that is that Muslims who convert are generally well aware of the risks, yet do so anyway - leading me to believe that they're of the more educated class)

I really don't know, but you're right about those who convert to Islam being educated. Same goes for Jews, perhaps even more so.

This is not a recent phenomenon. For centuries, missionaries have preached conversion to various tribal people across the globe, insisting that theirs is the one true way (often at gunpoint, but you don't realize that part). Look back at the missions in upstate New York, or California back in the European settlement of the Americas. The missionaries were accompanied by soldiers, with guns. Most Native Americans (who could barely communicate with them due to language barriers) got the distinct impression "accept God as your saviour, or die so we can prove you should have".

Islam's traditional missionaries were the soldiers taking a land. The same can be said about Christianity but after the protestant revolution, things changed toward peace.

Now that you mention it, I don't hear about Islamic missionaries. Charity is supposedly preached in Islam but you don't really see it much in practice, probably because Muslim nations are receiving the charity from Christian nations. I'm not being mean, things may change 100 years from now.

As for uneducated people turning Christian, Christianity is for all, especially the poor and downtrodden who tend to be uneducated due to where they live and in what conditions. These are the people who desperately need Christianity.

Jesus did go out of his way to save the humble, the poor, and the lowly in society that no one else wanted, and he commanded his followers to do the same.

Christians consider it to be a sign of honor, and humility, that we accept people that no one else considers to be valuable, because God loves everyone -- especially the poor. You are criticizing Christians for something that Jesus commanded us to do, and we are actually proud of it.

On the other hand, I know of a lot of intelligent and educated Christians. Some have claimed to have converted from atheism, or another religion.

You can read some stories from people explaining why they converted to Christianity from Islam below, if you are curious.

===edit==
"...we don't think however that you should accept what we say to get it (like a missionary would). "

This is another case of an ignorant Muslin slandering Christians. No missionary that I know of asks people what they believe before offering help. Jesus required us to feed our enemies.

And giving me the thumbs down doesn't change the truth.

I have read several books about science and how it relates to God's work. Several of these books were from atheists who turned to Christianity as their research progressed. I did not come to God as an uneducated yokel. Most atheists and evolutionists, on the other hand, listen to others rant about how there is no God without looking into it themselves. They base their lives on the here-say of others. That is a dangerous way to live.

I just cannot see why you are reasoning that converts must be uneducated. I became a Christian in my 30s and was not brought up in a church. I am well educated and have a high IQ. Many people in 3rd world countries are more open to the Gospel because thay don't have as many things to sidetrack them as we do in the west. People in the west are more inclined to put their faith in what they can see and touch and when ill, for example, would trust in doctor's and medicine before looking to God. This is actually a major blockage to seeing God work in wondrous ways. When God is all there is to trust, faith can be high and in accordance with His word, He does move in response to faith. Maybe it is we who are uneducated!

I have just read your additional information and I'm sorry but you are totally ignorant of how Christianity is growing in the world, China actually now top in growth. I am sure that amongst their own kind Muslims may be generous in giving to the poor but I know from experience that they are not as generous as Christians. Just a few years ago, my church was involved in collecting for aid for a Muslim country. I went round every shop in my town asking for donations of food, sanitary items, clothing etc. Most shops gave me boxes and boxes which I had to get transport to collect, from the small family run businesses to the chain stores. The Muslims contributed too but the most I got from any of their shops was three cans of soup! You should actually learn about a subject before you try to expound it.

The major problem with converting out of Islam is intimidation - fear of discrimination or severe persecution including murder.

God often speaks to the humble; the pride of the proud prevents them hearing, so this could mean educated people remaining deceived by whatever belief system they are born into.

A lot of muslim converts in US are in jails, and this is because Mohammed approved of vengeance, and did it to people who annoyed him, which means Mohammedanism can appeal to people of violent habitual character, unwilling to admit to their sin out of pride. God's true religion doesn't allow this kind of thing ("vengeance is mine, says the Lord"). If God's salvation message in Christ loses converts to crueller creeds then that is the converts' loss - let God be God, even if men reject His revelation.

-------------

NB The Muslim world has been an intellectual backwater for the last 5 centuries. Investigate any area of science (except cookery and caligraphy). I doubt any scientists convert to it, as the Mohammedan world has no reputation in Science at the moment. I think the control freak mentality that Mohammed exhibits in the Koran is the ultimate reason for this.

Rich doesn't mean intelligent and poor doesn't mean uneducated.

FWIW - there's a difference between KNOWLEDGE and WISDOM - you can know about a lot of earthly things, and still not be very wise.

Psalm 111:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom...

Matthew 19:24
Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."
