Montreal is quite the place. I'm not knocking St.Johns..I love the city as well, but considering you've never been, I'd be more inclined to visit Montreal (it may be cheaper to fly to, but more expensive to stay/visit)
Montreal is the closest thing to the "European" feeling in North America. It has history (Old City still has coblestone streets and historic buildings), nightlife (clubs on Cresent and St.Denis), Shopping (St.Catherines), and plently of culture.
Obviously it would help if you spoke some french, but if you're downtown, it won't matter.
I'm glad you enjoyed Newfoundland...the east coast is Awesome! (Of course I'm biased coming from New Brunswick originally). Hope you have a great trip!

I live here in St. John's, and would suggest that you sit down and really look at the possibilities of the trip you want to take. If you have the time, then St. John's and the province of Newfoundland could be the right place for you for sightseeing and so forth. If you have not been to Montreal, they have a spectacular nightlife and old world charm.

I love Montreal! I've been there dozens of times. I've been to Newfoundland once (not St Johns - yet), and am going back in September.
If you've never been to Montreal, you should definitely check it out. You can do Newfoundland again the time after hat.

I would definitely recommend a stop in Quebec City (especially vieux-quebec). Also not sure about your route or if you were planning on visiting the other maritime provinces but Lunenburg, NS is worth a visit to. It is a UNESCO world heritage site and has a really cool fisheries museum. Also the City Hotel in Fredericton is really quirky and cool.

Montreal, bien-sur. and [repeat] simply quoting agentw40, "And to the moron with _ response: [if you don't know what the situation is ] you're not too bright either... " -- this agent006 my ultimate authority on inexpertness. I hopefully more informed & at least more respectful. (I'm referring to another section). as for Montreal -- as long as one knows basic French -- contrary to certain opinions, you know who you are -- a visit to Montreal can be a pleasurable experience.
