An interesting notion. No, not really. If you walk into a room and people are condemning you as immoral and your beliefs as stupid, while showing no greater virtue of any kind themselves, it takes a very cool head to keep from acting in the same manner.

Yes and no. My guard doesn't usually go up until I sense condescension or ulterior motives. Now, I grant I've asked plenty of questions in similar ways as to create other people's guards to raise. But I even have two questions out there right now that show my progression of the desire to understand. The first question, I can see, was rude. The second question is truly seeking to understand. Both regard the same topic.
If someone is rude, I'm rude right back. If they are truly kind, I'm kind back.

It is true that some questions throw up my guard. I try to be earnest, but do not always secede.
I do answer more glibly than I did at first, as I see the same questions posted by the same people that I have answered before. Some times it is more a shouting match here than a debate or discussion.

There is such a thing as being to open minded.
It is important to remain open to other ideas, but at the same time remain a healthy skeptic and seek out answers on your own. If we were receptive to every belief, we would all be rather conflicted..

Even if you are trapped in 'feelings' of threat/defensiveness about your ideas/ideals, open mindedness is still possible - but only with TREMENDOUS internal effort to transcend those impulses.

Good question. I think it takes some work to try to put yourself in someone else's shoes.. it's nearly impossible if that person presents their views with an attitude of superiority, condescension, and a 'my-way-is-the-only-way' attitude.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion...I always listen. May not agree, but I am not the judge. So, yes...I am open minded.
