I want to start being more green. I talk about it all the time but now I want to start doing something about it. I obvioulsy can't encourage my freinds to do something also, unless I set an example.

BUT.

There are many Offset Carbon Footprint sites around (I've been looking at www.climatecare.org).

Which one is geniunely the best to use?

There are indeed a great many carbon offsetting websites and some are better than others.

One of the most effective way to offset your emissions is by planting trees. If you choose to go down this avenue then choose a company that plants in the Tropical regions. Tree planting here is much more effective at offsetting carbon emissions, if trees are planeted in the wrong locations (cold, northerly latitudes for example) they can do more harm than good.

There's more about carbon offsetting and some companies that provide this service on this webpage http://profend.com/global-warming/pages/combat.html#5

It may be worth bearing in mind that if you want to go carbon neutral you'll have to plant a lot of trees. The average American produces just under 20 tons of CO2 emissions per year, the average tree in the Tropics sequesters 40kg of CO2 a year. That means you need to plant 500 trees and it won't be for another 15 years or so until the trees have become established that they start to make a significant contribution.
