Well you're starting our right by making books and reading a part of his life so early. That is probably the most important thing you can do, because by the time your son is old enough to occupy himself, it will be second nature to him to pick up a book. Limit his TV time, and encourage lots of outdoor activities. Don't let him have unlimited access to the video game console either. Look for "story time" events at your local library, and ask the librarian for recommendations for appropriate books for your son at various ages. (I didn't raise any boys, so I don't know what they read these days.)

It sounds like you're doing a great job to encourage your son to read. Just remember, although you can encourage books and outdoor activities, you can't necessarily ensure that your child will like them. I have one child who loves books, art, writing, etc., and another who can't sit still long enough to get through 1 sentence!
What you can do is limit screen time. I tell my kids when they go on the computer or are watching TV that they only have a certain amount of time for that activity. After that time is up, they need to find another activity (such as playing outside or I will get a book ready to read to them). There have been times that I have had to turn off the computer or TV if they didn't stop playing/watching at the specified time, but all in all this approach seems to work pretty well. My children enjoy a range of activities.

You're already on a good path. Reading to your child early on, even before he understands, is the key to getting him interested. Children learn from example too, so by him seeing you read will encourage him to do the same. Even if your husband likes video games, doesn't mean your son will have the same enthusiasm for them. Discuss this with your husband though and encourage your son to do other things. My husband is a TV junkie, so my daughter watches more TV than she should, but we've been reading to her since she was a small infant and now she loves books. She is 2 now and will even read to herself. (She points to the pictures and can remember parts of the stories). Most books for smaller children (who can't read yet) are for both boys and girls. When your son is in school and is learning to read on his own, you can discuss popular books with his teacher or the librarian. You can also take him to the city library and get ideas there. Many libraries have activities for children.

I think this is less a question of what to read, and more of keeping his interest in reading. Seeing his father play video games all of the time might affect his attention towards books. Being role models will go a long way.

just make it a rule to play the video games (X) amount of hours a day (whatever you want) I certainly understand you don't want him to be a junkie but remember video games CAN be very educational.
Just show him a variety of all the things you mentioned as he gets older (take him on nature walks, scavenger hunts, library) and I'm sure he will do fine.
He very well may like books and stories you liked as a kid. My kids do. Just gets books at the library and see what seems to interest him (as he gets older of course)
sounds like your doing a great job with him! keep it up!
=)

Hi, how about personalized books? Kids love to hear their own name in the storyline, it keeps them more interested in the book because they're actually in it! Go to this website http://www.tlc-expressions.com They have lots of titles like Sesame Street, Teddy Bear Land, Dinosaur Land, Spider-Man, Batman, Superman, Three Little Pigs, Noah's Ark, Sports titles and so many more. Check it out - they're very reasonably priced, and make a wonderful, unique & special gift... It's something they can enjoy now and keep forever!! Good Luck!

If you don't want your son to be addicted to video games, the easiest way to ensure this is to keep him out of the room whenever your husband plays his games (especially if they're violent). My husband always plays his games in the other room and closes the door. I don't want my daughter to get into them either.... lol.... and continue to read to him whenever possible. He is still quite young and probably won't be interested in sitting for an entire book, but short stories are perfect for him. I started out by reading a collection of nursery rhymes to my daughter. They are little books, with one nursery rhyme in each book, so it kept her attention. She is now 26 months and absolutely loves books! We read everyday.

Make reading an every day event. My son loves to be read to before nap times and night times, it's our special cuddle time. Play with your child outside. your son will want to spend time with you rather than staring at a T.V. screen
AS for the father, you could ask him to ait until your son goes to sleep.
Any books sutiable for his age should work, animals, cars, colors shapes etc... my son loves the magazine/books called "Baby Bug"
