Miniature Schnauzers are very smart! I own 3 and own a Miniature Schnauzer Rescue. I have trained and showed my girl Chloe for 7 years. She listens all the time, unless she is outside...then she is in her own little world.
Some Schnauzers have "selective hearing." They choose what they want to hear and if they should obey.
Coax your Schnauzer with a treat and teach that it is good to listen. Obedience training if very good for this problem.
Also, sometimes there is so much ear hair in Schnauzer ears that it constantly needs to be plucked out by a groomer. Ear hair blocks the amount of sound vibrations sent into the ear, and a delayed response. This may have something to do with it; my Chloe has CONSTANT ear hair, luckily my mom is a groomer.
Never hit or scream at any dog, especially some Schnauzers (like my Chloe again...) are very sensitive and hurt, emotionall, very easily. Just a stern voice if frustrated and a happy voice for recall, etc.
Good luck!

I had a schnauzer, super smart and highly trainable, not a nervous wreck either. It's NOT the breed. But, he may be inbred, and/or you may have purchased him when he was over 13 weeks old, which, in my opinion, is getting too old for a new puppy. The whole "imprinting" stage is finished when they are 16 weeks old, so you've got all that time missed, and don't know what he'd been exposed to.
If you got him young enough, it may just be a case of inbreeding, over breeding the same stock, which may affect his overall quality. I would definitely give classes a shot.

It's not the breed; your dog just doesn't understand what you want it to do. Remember that dogs are not language users themselves so they don't automatically listen to and understand what you say. You have to train them patiently, gently, and systematically. A positive-methods class or tape (for instance Ian Dunbar's Sirius Puppy Training, which is also good for older dogs) will be very helpful. There are also lots of books on the market, but the class or tape can be helpful because you get to see other people struggling with their unruly dogs and you realize you're not alone :-).

it's all in teh training. you maywant to consider dog obedience classes. in order to train for dog obedience you need to learn how to get teh dogs attention on you.
Schauzers are very smart and sometimes so smart they will train you. they can be stubborn and it sounds like your dog has never been actually trained you probalby try to train but you dont' show what the correct behavior is or the other problem people have is say to trin to sit they continue to say the word until teh dog finally does it this trains the dog it doesn't have to listen and can just do it when it feels like it.
sound like you need to go to dog obedience class to be trained how to train your dog.
Please don't think I'm blaming you for being a bad owner I'm just saying that the dog and youneed the help of someone who knows how to do this corectly.
Have you had the dog checked to see if it may be deaf.that is also a possability
Good Luck

it isn`t the breed,i have a schnauzer and he listens just perefectlly.i trained my dog by using a news paper,or rolled up magazine. everytime he/she does something wrong you should lightly spank the dog with the newspaper or magizine. now the dog should know right from wrong. make sure to reward him/her,
hope that helps

Well, they can be a little independent, but they're still very trainable. Why not either get some advice from your dog's breeder or go to obedience classes where a qualified instructor can teach you how to train your dog.

he is eminently train able. they do have high-spirited temperament with extreme reliability. You have to keep them mental exercise (such as advanced obedience or agility" will satisfy his highly devolved intelligence. With out structured activities he will find his own amusement. Also what might help is If you establish yourself as the alpha.

The age might figure in to the equation also. Teenage pups get rebellious.
