This is a tough one.

I will make some suggestions BUT, it really depends on what the fabric or upholstery is.

Most anything oily, wd40 or Pam (kitchen spray) or veg oil or even Pnut butter. These will loosen the adhesion from the item it is stuck to. (I use it to remove labels from bottles I want to save) It usually works, but not always on bottles.

But the finish is key. If it is a fabric, does the cover come off so you can wash it with a degreaser after you have removed the Tar.
