Hi, I had a similar situation in my old house. I bought a drop-leaf table. When I needed a surface for everyone to eat at, I lifted the leaf. When not in use, I left the leaf down. Hope this helps. :)

If your children are still fairly young a great option is to put a long bench on one side of the dinning table. It saves space and its easier to squeeze all their little butts onto a long bench than a couple of chairs. Or on one wall build or buy a banquette seat (like a booth in a restaurant) and put chairs on the other. It could be beautiful and functional and a great space saver. Bottom line 3 chairs seat 3 people, a bench or banquette seats as many as can fit.
Hope that helps! Good luck!
PS- sorry for all the goofy answers you were getting. I hope you get a couple more good (and seriouse!) answers.

Rectangular table, as long and narrow as possible.
Get a bench for the wall side, that will fit under the table, and maybe 2 chairs for each end and/or 2 chairs for the side opposite the bench. I have also seen (on a home dec show, and possibly in JCPenney's catalog) tables that fold out from
cabinets, so that you get them out when you need them. Some even have chairs that fold and store in the cabinet.

I'm not sure about using a steam mop but it does look inviting to try that out. I also found a great cleaner from the family dollar store called "Awesome" and it really brightened up my kitchen floor from a grayish haze. Our floor is about twenty yrs old and it has lost it's shine but after using this new cleaner it really helped. I use a mop to clean and just squirted some of the cleaner over those areas and allowed it to sit a minute or two. As we get older it is hard to get down on your hands and knees as we did when we were younger. Once in a while I put a coat of new sealer on it for old floors. I use a cloth and down on hands and knees to put that on. It takes about an hour to dry but it lasts up to six months with a beautiful shine. I bought the new sealer from Ace hardware store. What an amazing difference it makes. Best of luck to you.

Make it a built in banquette. Build a bench or buy one that fits into the area, put the table in the middle, and color to your heart's content. It's not the size of the space that matters, it's what you do with it.

We used bench seating, much like they use in restaurants.
A lot of seating in very little space.
Check out the link, a little extravagant for me however the
idea is what's important.
Google bench or corner seating for more.
Have a pleasant day.
