I am a guy, with straight, thin hair. I avoid rubbing my hair with a towel, since I am scared of damaging it. I just pat it for a while, but it remains mostly wet or damp. Can leaving it like this make it dry, or damage it? If so, then how should I towel my hair properly?

Squeeze excess water from your hair before wrapping it in a towel and gently squeezing it dryer. Allow hair to dry most of the way by itself if you are going to blowdry it. You can definitely over stress your hair by rubbing it with a towel. It abrades the cuticle and causes fly aways and may make your hair feel rough.

For best results leave the hair wrapped in the towel for half an hour and then let it finish drying natually.

the way you did it is correct. patting/blotting is the way to go. you dont really want to rub it, as that wont make more water come off your hair, it will just give you tangles
