If someone's breath is that bad, and they are an adult, you can bet that someone has already told him, and not necessarily politely. I have a coworker in the high school where I work with the problem, and at least once a month a student tells him. He always explains to the students that he has a health condition (I forget the name of it) that causes the problem, and there is nothing his doctor or dentist has been able to do to fix it. I'm guessing that your coworker may have a similar issue. If I'm wrong, and he has made it to adulthood without anyone saying a word to him about it, the offering him a daily mint may give him a clue, but most likely he is aware of the problem, and that would just make him even more self consious.

Everyone, I think, WANTS to know when their breath stinks but how do we ask someone if it does? In a sense, your question is the same -- how?
With tact. Don't use the word stinks or smells, though. Those are offensive words. How about 'you might want to freshen up your breath. I have some breath mints if you want them.' No one is offended and the person with the bad breath has the opportunity to correct the problem.

If you have breath mints take one for yourself and offer him one. Ask him if he would mind you giving him some advice and tell him as gently as possible. He may not realize his breath stinks. Extremely bad breath can be a sign of some kind of underlying medical problem.

Don't offer a mint, he will not get the idea. People with bad breath never do.
Just be honest and tell him. Be kind about it:
"Hey, um... I figured I should let you know, but your breath is kind of bad.. I don't want to offend you, but I figured it would be right to tell you."
That is the best way to approach it. It's honest and direct.
Most people with bad breath don't care, though.... They have bad hygeine for a reason: Apathy. All the advice and complaining in the world won't change their bad habits if they don't want to change.

If you know him well and is a friend you work with I think I would politely mention the problem. He may not even know he has bad breath. If I did , I'd want someone to tell me!
Good luck!!

Buy a pack of gum or mints and when you go to eat one, ask him, "Hey Bob, want some gum?" If he declines, smile at him and ask, "Are you SURE?" Eventually after doing this enough times, he should take the hint.

keep offering him gum, mints, etc. If that does not work then just come out and tell him the truth. Why should you have to suffer?

That's a hard one. Maybe you can discretely give him mints everyday.
