Indeed, veal is the meat from immature cattle. But don't confuse veal with the extra steps taken by the Japanese in producing Kobe beef, the most expensive meat... The calves aren't chained but neither are they free to roam the pastures. Kobe beef are fed milk products and receive massages to make their flesh more pleasing to the palate. SICK!!!
One reason veal is much more costly is simple... smaller animals yield less meat than a huge steer, full grown to 2000 pounds or so.

In the past the rasing of calf's for veal was pretty unethical (i.e keeping them in the dark to keep the meat pale), but now (in the UK at least) practices have changed a lot and are no longer cruel to the animals.

This site has a bit about veal production in the UK. If you buy rose veal it will have been less cruel on the calfs than white veal.

Veal is made from baby calfs. The are chained to a pole and have a very small wooden gate put around them. They can't move, turn around, or anything. It's very sad! They are also injected with antibiotics and other things since they can become very sick and weak. I think it should be illegal to do that to those poor baby calfs....

Yes, George. It is absolutely true. If you've ever seen a video of this, it's totally heartbreaking. The conditions for the baby calves is unimagineable.
Please don't eat veal anymore!

It's sad and it's true. Don't eat veal and don't eat foie gras (goose liver pate) either.

In the past veal was a calf that had been confiened in a small pen so it could not stand/move around. the idea is to raise the calf to point of viable slaughter while keeping the meat as tender as possible. tons and tons of di information has been put out their as to how they are cared for and handled.
first of i do not eat veal, i do not like the idea of any industry that confines an animal and slaughtering it at such a young age.
this being said lets get to the point, we have numurose laws in this country in regaurds to animal cruialty, veal farmes are held to those standards as well. No the calves do not have their legs cut off, no they are not held in little boxes void of sun light and no they are not feed a strait milk diet. cows and calves poop a lot! a small box would not allow for a sanitary condition and would be very very difficult to clean daily! secondly it would be almost impossible to keep any animal on an intravenous diet unless it was unconscious and no animal would sustain long under anesthesia. the last thing any rancher wants is for his product to taste bad so no they are not kept on drugs to keep them alive longer
P.E.T.A. will go to any lengths to get their end goal and yes this includes lying to the public sometime to the point of outlandish claims. anything is ok with them as long as they get what they want. so do the research yourself i have worked at both dairy farms and ranches and most definitely enjoy a good thick steak once in a while. bring on the hate mail!! you can be angry but the truth is the truth
