No. Learning other languages and cultures is a good thing to do, but English is almost universal.

The unfortunate thing about Japanese is that they are so exclusive that the language never really got used by anyone outside of Japan.

I live in Singapore and during World War 2 there were Japanese schools set up to teach the locals the language but when Japan surrended, the language was forgotten as well.

English is useful because so many people speak it all around the world. If you love Japan and Japanese culture, then learning the language will give you insight into the country. This is also useful if you intend at some point to work in Japan.

Apart from that however, it's recommend you look at another language which is probably spoken by more people. You'll simply get more practice and a richer experience that way.

No, its not important to learn Japanese unless you're visiting Japan or planning to live there, since the people out there almost 'REFUSE' to communicate in any language but their own. But of course, being a linguist is great, so if you're interested in the language, go ahead and learn it! =)

if you are Japanese and is your main language, then it is good... if you have a relative who is Japanese and you find it hard to relate with him/her then good... but doing it for random is also good but i really say it really isn't as important as English! english is the universal language and almost everyone in the world can speak it!
