I live right across the street from a popular church in my city, St Roman's Catholic. Every year they hold this huge carnival, and so do many other churches in my city. Don't get me wrong, I love the fact that I can just walk right across the street for those 4 days and go on "Freak Out", "Zipper" and others. But I'm wondering why they do this. Is it a fundraiser, or is it to bring more people to the church? I've never been approached by anyone preaching, so I don't think that's it. What's the reason? They have the trucks with the parts of the rides sitting in their parking lot (getting excited here and can't wait until Thursday), and that's what started me thinking about why they do it.

Our Catholic church here just had its summer festival this weekend. In our case, it's a fundraiser for the school, one of many things we do throughout the year in order to keep tuition at a manageable level for most people's budgets. Of course, our priests and deacons and even a few of the religious sisters from a nearby convent can usually be seen walking around at the festival (or more likely working at it), so if someone had questions about Catholicism they'd be welcome to ask, but that's not the purpose. It does provide a nice way for all of our neighbors, of any faith (or none), to just get together with their families and have fun -- so I'd say that's the second reason to have the festival, after fundraising.

It could be fundraising. Probably done in the summer because more people are out side and more active than any other time of the year.
Churches used to be very social, very much a part of the town life. It was a social center.
That has largely changed, due in part, I think to the way this country has changed...people work longer, don't even know their neighbors anymore, there are more things people do in isolation from others.

If you have never been approached by any one preaching, then u cld be attending it from a distance far from the preachers.
Such festivals keep the church and its followers close since they ( Church leaders) know that any mind needs to such a treat.

Most churches do it as a fundraiser. Churches tend to have no money and that is one of the biggest events for many churches to help them get out of the red.

Fundraiser. My mom's church does this stuff. The church members who help out have a lot of fun too.

Why not? Our church does it as an outreach - mainly to let people know where we are, afterall, how can someone attend services if they don't know where the church is). Its not a fundraiser for us - the entire event is free for everyone, the church pays for everything. We do it just to love people - as you said, you love that they do it, so it's working!

Probably a fundraiser. There is no religious significance to funnel cakes and ring toss that I know of.

But there is a community building aspect to it, also.
