please read http://www.scripturecatholic.com/
the first three parts deal directly with your question and the rest may deal with other questions you may have. the practice is perfectly scriptural and can be seen in a variety of passages. to emphasize, are you protestant? do you think your pastor teaches infallibly or can be in error? the pope from the link i gave you(which you will see in scripture) teaches infallibly from the promise jesus gave his church through the holy spirit. god bless.
for the other answers, catholics realize that the pope can sin, but regarding areas of faith and the bible he cannot err in any way, he is infallible in regards to this. do you know that the pope himself must receive confession from another bishop? do you realize the catholic church is the only reason anyone has a bible today? the pope didn't make the rules jesus did when he gave succesion to st peter. please check out www.scripturecatholic.com
the church is the "pillar and bulwark" not the bible. (not denouncing its authority but from scripture and history we see the church gave us the bible not the other way around.)
matt...... that was really cool of you, giving a catholic perspective even though you are protestant, thats the way to be christian, god bless.

The Catholic Church teaches that the Pope is infallible at closely defined times.
The Pope is only infallible when he, in union with the body of bishops, solemnly teaches that a doctrine as true. This is called "ex cathedra", literally meaning in Latin "from the chair".
This comes from the words of Jesus to Peter (the first Pope) and the Apostles (the first bishops), "Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven" (Matthew 18:18) and "He who hears you hears me" (Luke 10:16).
At all other times the Pope can be just as wrong or sinful as you and me and be in need of forgiveness.
With love in Christ.

What is wrong with papal infallibilty? It says right in Scripture that the Holy Spirit guides the Church Christ founded. By not having faith in the Pope to correct, reprove and instruct, you may as well be saying you don't have faith in the Holy Spirit

It's not Biblical. Most Catholics don't believe it anyway. A pope gave himself that ability way back when, and it simply hasn't been corrected - much like a state's outdated laws. It doesn't mean it's really part of the Catholic faith. It doesn't come into play.

I should start off by saying I disagree with this since I'm a protestant. But since you asked:
John 1:42, Mark 3:16 ("And to Simon he gave the name "Peter", "Cephas", or "Rock")
Matthew 16:18 ("thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church"; cf. Matthew 7:24-28, (the house built on rock)
John 21:15-17 ("Feed my lambs or sheep.") (stated three times)
Luke 10:16 ("He that heareth you, heareth me; and he that despiseth you, despiseth me; and he that despiseth me, despiseth him that sent me.")
Luke 22:31-32 ("confirm thy brethren")
Acts 15:28 ("For it hath seemed good to the Holy Ghost and to us, ...") ("the Apostles speak with voice of Holy Ghost")
Matthew 10:2 ("And the names of the twelve apostles are these: The first, Simon who is called Peter,...") (Peter is first.)
Matthew 16:19 ("whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven")
That last one's critical in the discussion.
It should also be mentioned that the infallibility of the Pope has only been exercised on 2 doctrines. Mary's Assumption (1950) and the Immaculate Conception (1854). Of course, Protestants disagree with both points. (At least to the best of my knowledge. I have not met a Protestant that does agree).

this may well be a brilliant question and Imacatholic's sturdy answer helped me to understand why they think of so rather of pope. although, I strongly disagree that Jesus made Simon ( whom he named Peter ) on my own somebody with God's authority. i might prefer to correctly known which between the popes desperate to tutor that any possible purchase they thank you to heaven..that unquestionably did no longer come from God. i think Catholics are Christians yet many cultists like Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormons have copied the type Catholic church have been appearing simply by fact the only authentic faith...fortuitously Catholic church is in comparison to that anymore. Jehovah's Witnesses declare that Jesus Himself appointed them to be the only authentic channel of verbal replace between God and human beings. Joseph Smith taylor made " The e book of Mormon, yet another testomony of Jesus Christ" and that they have got self belief they're the only authentic Christians. we would desire to ascertain all style of reality claims and back them up with the Bible. different than for the word of God we are left with human evaluations.

It isn't backed up by scripture.
It's backed up by the Roman Catholic Church, which is it's own authority.
Besides, the pope says so, that's why. And he's the pope, so he knows.
Yeah, I know. But that's the way it really works.

All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
"He who says he has no sin makes God a liar and the truth is not in him."
The infallibility of the pope is a man made council approved notion. Not a God inspired scriptural truth.

A pope started it. It's unbiblical and blasphemous. Because of it, the catholic institution is unable to repent of past mistakes. How can it repent if it can't make mistakes? It's plunged itself right into the worst sin of them all - pride.

It isn't there.
Many things the Catholics do aren't found in the Bible either.
So it is with protestants.
So long as it DOES NOT violate God's revealed will in His written word, the Bible.
