XP can be upgraded to Windows Vista anytime you want, and all the High Profile softwares like Limewire, Skype etc have already released their vista compatible versions. Most softwares which were actually meant for XP, also work well on Vista. Though you may come across a few software which dont support Vista- for example- McAfee Security Suite 2006 is vista incompatible and the company does not plan to release compatible versions as McAfee 2007 is Vista capable. And 90% of all microsoft products run on Vista (including MSN msngr etc). You may also Dual boot so that you can switch back to the good old XP every now and then.

You can only run one operating system, but you CAN upgrade from XP to Vista. Don't recommend it as yet - there are still bugs in Vista! I think you will find everything you are currently running will work in Vista and more.
