to the questions "what do we call christmas now?' -
Krishnamas, obviously.
There are also remarkable similarities between the Christ story and the Mithra story. (Not the Mothra story...)

born centuries before Jesus? Try millennium and/or always was.
Krishna said
Bhagavad-Gita: Chapter 4,
Although I am unborn and My transcendental body never deteriorates, and although I am the Lord of all sentient beings, I still appear in every millennium in My original transcendental form. Whenever and wherever there is a decline in religious practice, O descendant of Bharata, and a predominant rise of irreligion--at that time I descend Myself. In order to deliver the pious and to annihilate the miscreants, as well as to reestablish the principles of religion, I advent Myself millennium after millennium.

Here you see how it is spoken about the sun-god maybe the god of Osisris, The truth was only one but many the gods then, today the truth is only one but many the religions, philosophies and ideologies, all put according to current time in mankind:
Bhagavad-Gita Chapter 4, Verse 1.
The Blessed Lord said: I instructed this imperishable science of yoga to the sun-god, Vivasvan, and Vivasvan instructed it to Manu, the father of mankind, and Manu in turn instructed it to Iksvaku.
As somebody said here, This things are belived to have happened a millenium ago or so, maybe even more. We could say that after the mix of languages happened, and the men went around the world, or whatever other way it was...
...All great civilzations where to be prepared for the coming of Jesus, He would bring all man together in only one belief, putting aside the story that the physical jews or israelites are the only people God cares about.
So in preparation for Gentiles to enter the same promise it seems to have been allowed to angels, good and or bad to created similarities of experiences in the coming of a savior.
We must admit that the belief in Jesus as of today has been the one of more transcendental expansion.
The killing of the infants in time of the romans were is said to be the time when they tried to kill Jesus has been Archeologically proved, Satan knew then that a savior would come, and he is known to set traps for the future. He also had control of knowledge coming to humans in the era before Jesus, or first Bestial system. Has not him done the same in this time giving men alternate ideas for the basis of new religions, and even new saviors, prophets, etc.?
Other case could be the fact that there are many things wrong dated in human history. Even my sister's birthday was later found to be wrong.

Theory: [Assume God is real.] God has not come himself to tell us all what is the right view of himself. Every human being tries to see God and tries to understand, but our understanding is limited because we are human with errors - therefore, each interpretation of God (interpretation of God = religion) has gotten a couple of things correct, but also has flaws caused by man trying to see God. No one's completely right, but the basics of right and wrong (do not kill, do not steal, do not rape, the golden rule) are the same because these are things we can all see (aside from the random extremists who refuse to see ANY human error). We're all seeking our answers, and we all have limited views - so we should all respect each other as we try to get to them.
