We adopted a cat. We have hardly seen her for months as she now sleeps all day under my bed, and most nights too. We adopted another cat that gets along with her and our dog but she is now fatter (despite being on a strict diet by a vet of 1 cup food a day & she weighs 33 lbs!), snores a bit, always has a horrible feminine body odor --- like she is in constant heat---(she is fixed though), is now also suddenly marking all over the house (because, as the Vet says, sheis asserting her dominance to other animals with her scent --- however, Vet says will stop if only pet though). She also gives "love bites" or licks when happy. I cannot take her back to shelter where adopted as they said they would give her 3 days then kill her, but every time I find her a new home the people she goes to live with as her new family brings her back because of her smell. I do not want her killed at a shelter but she is making my family miserable. She is 6 yrs, declawed lapcat w/shots, friendly. Advice?

Just fyi I did not declaw my cat, she was like that when I got her. She was also much fatter when I got her from the shelter a year and a half ago. We have tried for over 9 months now ever spray like FelAway and other hormones sprays to calm her from marking territories and it does not work. We have also worked with vets and used feminine cat sprays, meds, and altered diets to try to "fix" the body odor issue too. I have spent months and many countless hours trying to solve it and keep her but I cannot, so please help me find a place that will take her & spare many any mean criticism. My family is fed up and wants her out ASAP and I have battled with them over this for too long. I live in southern CA (san diego) but can take her to Orange county too if you know of a place that can take her and will care for her (& hopefully find her a permanent home). I will NOT take her to a kill shelter! She is sweet (just smelly) and deserves to be happy & have a family. P.s. she's pretty

I have done extensive (& expensive) tests on the cat and she is in perfect health other than the fact that she is very heavy. (She is a Moah though - egyptian tabby - which is typically very large and heavy... kinda like a huge version of an american shorthair with tiny ears.) She has bee ruled out of being diabetic, kidney failure, or any other known ailment. I was told it was inflaming of glands that cause the smell. They are the ones that put off smell when girl cats are in heat, but despite being fixed she always smells because of them constantly secreting the odor. P.s: I have also tried shampooing her with nicely smelling scents and it just adds to the smell, not taking it away. Ugh. And, she has been pampered her whole life and an indoor kitty so no way can it be parasitic from wild game.

our cat has seen numerous vets and all say she is in good health but she is just puting off alot of scent because of glands that attract during mating. She is doing so several believe because she is using it as a way to show dominance with her scent. However none believe above her norm or see any indication of any health issue. I have consistantly looked for answers so as to keep her but now need ideas on where I can take her. My family wants a fix now as it has been 9 months of this (peeing & smelling up the house).

If you don't mind driving a bit there is a no kill shelter in N. Palm Springs called Orphan Pet Oasis. You might want to call them and see if they have room for her. They function purely on donations (or at least they used to). I have been there and I know they house the animals until placed or permanently if needed. If I didn't have too many now I would offer.... here is their number and web address : 760 329 0203

I am glad you are using both wet and dry food with her. The quality of her food (Meow Mix) is atrocious. Please start her on a quality food. Natural Balance is not too expensive and they have good varieties in wet and dry food. Definitely no more grocery stores food for her - they are all 2/3 corn which is very fattening. The Natural Balance, Eagle Pack, Solid Gold etc. use brown rice in their formulation and this will not be as fattening for her. I do think that she should be evaluated by a veterinarian also to be sure there are no other physical problems. It is not natural for a cat to have a "greasy" coat not to smell. Just don't let the vet talk you into any "diet" foods or Science Diet as they are all loaded with carbohydrates which will keep her gaining weight.

while reading this question, the song *smelly cat* by phebe from the friends show kept running thru my head. for all of you begging the person not to have her put down, why dont you adopt her? pay the cost to have her shipped, and let you smell up your house? this is a person who has gone to nearly heroric lengths to try and make this cat work in his home(not to mention heroric cost) unfortunatly, if a suitable home cant be found for her, there may be no choice but to put her down. im sure shes not very happy living under your bed, where no one wants to pet her. i would suggest try finding an elderly person to adopt her? they have the time and inclination to bathe her daily, and theyre sense of smell may not be as strong as ours. good luck, i truley hope everything works out for you.

Can't your vet find the cause of the smell? Usually they smell when something is wrong with them. Try to change her diet and check her kidney function. Please don't let her die! She is a good kitty, give her a chance.

the bad smell can be from other medical issues as can the weight gain... unless your vet has checked for diabetes and kidney function, go to another vet. suddenly starting marking is not normal ..unless you suddenly got more animals...

Try giving her to someone with no sense of smell.

Or alternatively spray her with deodarant.

Or have her stuffed with pot-pourri...

Salt, pepper, soya sauce, sautee till lightly browned, that should do the trick.

I wasn't aware that a spade kitty could still mark, in fact that is highly unusual. Please don't hurt kitty, please continue to find her a better home.
