If 6 points received within 2 years of test pass then you are not banned from driving. Your full licence is revoked.. you will never get it back until you re-pass your test, theory and practical. You can however continue to drive with a provisional license subject to it's provisions.
After 2 years you can accumalate up to 11 points on your licence before a ban is considered on the basis of 'totting up' points. Reach 12 and the court will almost certainly ban you from driving for a stated time. There are occassional circumstances when a ban may result in significant hardship when it will not be imposed. (wouldn't rely on this too much!). If banned you cannot drive at all until it has expired. You will normally then have your full licence returned to you without a re-test, unless the court ordered you to take one at the time of banning you.
