if your talking about meditation you just have to keep bringing your mind back to your breath or whatever you are using as a focus of meditation, you have to practice concistantly and often
the idea behind meditation is to train your focus so that your mind can focus on the most boaring task such as breathing, this in term creates extreme focus in every other part of your life and the ultimate goal is to find enlightment (some monk say that this is a state where the most simple task creates enormous pleasure, perhaps because they are so focused on the task they see something in it that untrained people dont?"

Maybe try focusing a little less on emptying your mind. This is kind of like trying to ignore an itch, the more you think about not scratching the more you need to scratch it.
Try instead to let your mind wander, don't stress that your mind is thinking over things, you can actually meditate on things if you wish. In reality you will not be able to truly empty your mind until you have resolved some of the issues from the day, so let your mind contemplate the things that it needs to, just slowly try to turn of your concious thought and let your subconcious do what it will. Relax concentrate on your breathing and the things that you can easily control, you will slowly learn to control your mind better, rember this is an exercise like anytihng else and you woll get better and stronger at it with time and practice.

Practice, practice, practice.
You are not going to learn to meditate, and find your center overnight. The mind tends to wonder and deviate, and with practice you'll have the skill to focus it, and then you'll be able to find your center.
good luck!

hmmm.....it helps not to be overly worried whether your thoughts will distract you. The breath is often used to anchor our concentration; it may help just to remember to breath. Otherwise, you could just take yoga or some martial art with a meditation criteria.

Or you could hum to yourself(you know...auuuummmmmm) or try one of those mantras used in meditation and repeat it over and over and over and over and over and over in a monotonous voice. Either that'll keep you centered or you'll fall asleep while sitting.

Try concentrating your powers on a relaxing fantasy. Maybe use nature sounds or soothing music to aide you. A fountain may be benificial to you.

meditation helps when you concentrate on the path and circulation of your breath. what you want to ultimately achieve is the breathing circulation you had as a very young child when they or you where sleeping.

Even if you stop slipping from thought to though, you'll find yourself thinking about nothing... And even then, you'd find your thoughts on something... something called nothing.
