It certainly sounds like Gout, even though you are young you can still get this terrible affliction.
Ask the doctor to do a blood test and get a uric acid level check. THIS is the most accurate way of finding out or confirming Gout.
If you are prescribed drugs for Gout make sure you ask about side effects as all drugs are synthetic and have long and short term effects.
There are herbs and other remedies to take that are safe such as apple cider vinegar ( organic ) Cherries, baking soda ( small doses only 0 celery extracts etc.

You will have to change your diet also..
double check that it isn't Pseudo Gout as this is a calcium based gout which requires different prescription drugs and diet changes.
You can control gout but you have to learn about how your body functions and how to control its acidity.
Go to Gout-aware.com for free information, they have a good reference site . Make sure you see a doctor before taking any drug or herb etc as these can effect each individual differently.

good luck

Gout is a condition where uric acid crystals build up in the body.
This can happen in the area of the big toe and cause a lot of pain.
Our foods contain purines; some foods are higher in this than others.
The doctor may place you on a lower purine diet (of which they will usually provide you a list of foods to avoid. There is also medications that can lower the uric acid in the blood
Here an alternative way to cure gout?

Gout is actually a type of arthritis. You dont have to eat high fat foods or drink to get it. It is caused by uric acid crystal building up in the muscle tissue and joint.

This used to be called a Rich Mans disease because many men that ate alot of steak, drank alcohol and ate fatty food would get it.

Surprisingly, a diet high in purines will do it just the same. Green peas and some beans will do this. When I was at my healthiest, running 5 miles a day and working out on weights for 2 hours a day, I had gout. I was only taking in about 10 grams of fat a day but was eating alot of peas and other foods high in purines.

Yes even if a fly landed on your toe, it would hurt. It will usually run its course in 3-10 days but the Doc can give you some pills to reduce the uric acid build up.

I've only experienced it twice and that is enough.

You are correct in that you are not a likely candidate for gout, but it sounds like your are having an acute attack. My husband thought his foot was broken the first time he experienced what you are describing.
