No, they sure don't have to. Diamonds are commonly used because they are the hardest substance, so that signifies a marriage which will last forever - like, nothing will break it.
There are MANY other choices, gems and otherwise, which make totally beautiful engagement rings. I have diamonds and like them because they match totally everything, which is one plus. However, I recently bought myself a pink topaz with small diamonds on the side, and it would have made a gorgeous engagement ring!

While most rings do have diamonds as an engagement ring it really is a symbol of your commitment towards each other. A diamond is one of the first & most popular choices. However, there are many other options out there. From sapphires, rubies and aquamarines, the options are a plenty. An engagement ring can include diamonds but not necessarily be the main feature. As the world has witnessed Princess Diana’s choice of a blue sapphire ring.

Because of an extremely successful marketing campaign done by DeBeers. Before that, engagement rings were just rings, and were rarely diamonds. DeBeers, the largest diamond mining company in the world, began placing diamond engagement rings in the movies. Suddenly, everyone wanted one. Then, they started the whole "two months salary" and "a diamond is forever" campaign. People are suckers for marketing.

Here is the explanation of the origin of the diamond engagement ring:
In 1947, a maiden lady copywriter at N.W. Ayer, Frances Gerety, created the most durable advertising slogan in history: A diamond is forever. According to Howard Davis, Gerety coined the line after her nightly prayers, when she was awakened by a flash of inspiration. Within three years of creating the 'diamonds are forever' slogan, an estimated 80 percent of wedding engagements in America were consecrated with diamond rings. Gerety herself never wed, but she had wed a concept to diamonds.
I suppose that the slogan symbolized the everlasting relationship between two people. Read more about it in the link below.

Nowadays it is becoming very popular for women to get gemstones as their engagement ring cuz a lot of us really dont prefer diamonds. My engagement ring is blue topaz with diamond accents. It cost only a fraction of what a diamond the same cw would have cost and on top of that we got it while on sale at 75% off and to me it is a lot prettier. If you are considering purchasing an engagement ring try to find out what her tastes is and whether or not she likes diamonds.

I guess they don't have to as the ring is simply a symbol of commitment, but the reason diamonds are the most common choice is because the diamond is the most durable precious stone and the commitment is meant to be forever just like a diamond lasts forever.

Engagement rings to not have to be diamonds. If she likes diamonds, then go that route. If she doesn't like diamonds...then use her birthstone or favorite gem stone. A friend of mine used a sapphire as her engagement ring - it's beautiful.

Not at all, it's an advertisement that has been taken too far, there is too much pressure on men to spend more than they can afford, which I think is a selfish way to start married life. Yes diamonds are pretty, and yes they are durable, but they are certainly not a legal requirement for a ring.

I prefer other gemstones, and am sick of the diamond fad- they're advertised so the sellers can keep the price up far above their true worth. I'm so glad I got tanzanite, which is far more rare and price will continue to rise a lot.
If you're going to get diamond, though, please get one that is synthesized in a lab, because they are the only truly conflict-free diamonds. And diamonds don't last forever; they're graphite just like in all the pencils we use.

Because diamonds are for ever and by using a diamond in the engagement ring they hope that they will stay together for ever.
As diamond is costliest of the gems, the male who was considered as the sole earner of the family could prove that he can afford a diamond
