From my experience they work about the same, assuming the Aloe from the store is 80-90% or more pure. Aloe Vera from a bottle is usually in gel form and is easier to apply.

One other important consideration is that commercial Aloe Vera gels often contain an mild anesthetic (lidocaine HCL) that will help numb the pain and sting of a sunburn. Some prefer it, some not.

One of the best purchases I've made was on a bottle of pure aloe vera gel from the Dollar Mart. It's great on sunburn, grease splatters, bug bites, razor burns and cuts. And my aloe plant stays pretty!!

Both are fine. You might like to put it in your refrigerator before applying them. Your sunburned areas will definitely feel better.
