No, it is not really set up for back and forth discussions even with the edit feature. Besides debate sites need moderators or things tend to get out of control quickly.
I see it as a handy tool that is part game. IE who can get the "right" answer up first. It's also a way for folks to poll the "faceless masses" on issues they want popular opinion on.

I think they could open a "Debating Answers" section, for hard core debaters and formalize it and take statistics and stuff and use it as a tool for influencing governments. Thats not a bad idea. I think the world needs some more decisions made by the people as lets face it, our planet is being screwed by pollution and a central place to "hatch" alternatives isn't such a bad idea. Anyway I hope im not on a tangent there but, it could work with the right controls.

I did a survey for Yahoo yesterday, and they do understand that it is being used for debates. I do go back and reply to the asker repeatedly. The problem is when debating, people get offended and start violating people. I hang around the immigration, because its an interesting area for debates, but there is too much hate their. People internalize any criticism. Once in a while I will get a one on one debate through the e-mail or IM, that Yahoo answers starts.

Why not?
The best in town for problems solving.
All you need is keeping on knocking.
Some one of higher intelligent will even reach out and extend a helping hands to solve the mess out there.
If we don't knock.
Where are we going to get all the answers?
So keep on knocking.
Along the way.
We may come across with those having communication problems.
We just take a look at it see it make sense.
If not we just let it pass by with no harm done to any one in solving the mess for the good of mankind.

I believe it has the potential to become a tool to measure political and public interests. However, many opinions are just that, and some comments would waterdown the process because of a lack of facts or incorrect information used. Answers would have to be increasingly lengthy for substance and accuracy, and debates would have to keep civil tones, minus political or personal slurs for it to succeed.

I suppose it could on some levels but mostly this is an opinion site. Maybe they could create a different site for that. Instead of *Yahoo! Answers* they create *Yahoo! Debates*.

I believe there are many other forums for that. I also believe that this was never intended to be a debate site.

i think this site is for asking questions, and it really works.
but YAHOO people should also allow people to debate subjects and share there point of view.
and if not, it"s an opportunity for them to create one for the purpose.
i am confident that one will also be big hit like yahoo.
but for the time being allow members to debate there opinions.

Not on here....
People who do not like your opinion or beliefs will report you and have your account deleted...for the sole fact of disagreeing with you.
Go to forum at the top right hand corner then go to "Dispute a Violation" there are a TON of people there trying to get their accounts back.

Maybe later... They still have a lot of things to implement. Now we can block Troll... But I admit they could increase the positive implementations instead of the negative ones... People need such things to express their ideas and concerns.
