To be a Jedi or a Sith, you had to have a high level of midichlorians (sp?) in your system.

Neither Jedi nor the Sith were religons. They were, at least in the movies, orders of beings able to use the Force. The Force itself with a mystical energy field created by all life. It did play a role in some of the Star Wars universe's religons, though it wasn't always refered to as the Force. While some refered to the Force as a hokey religon (yeah, I'm refering to Han's quote in ANH), that wasn't the case. They may have believed it to be a religon as there were some charlatans who tried passing it off as such.
Lucas used a variety of real religons when creating the Jedi, Sith, and the Force, thus they do have a real world connection with religon.

it's sith not scythe. I agree with the first guy in that they were basically representative of Buddhist monks. The jedi's became such because they were more sensetive to the force than other beings. Think of it as a galaxy with thousands of Jesus's and senator palpatine is the devil and anakin is the anti-christ. I believe there were even some characters and/or species who didn't believe in the force and thought it was a myth. But in answer to your question they weren't jedi because they weren't "chosen" by the force.

Neither were religions. The Jedi were an order, not a religion.
Han Solo did not believe in the force, so I guess he was kinda like the atheist.

They didn't worship the force and the star wars literature is not specific about the alien religions. The jedi were similar to buddhist monks, they believed in a philosophy of detachment and balance.

I put my religion down as Sith one year on a census form. That was the year people was being urged to write "Jedi" to get it acknowledged as an official religion.

Doesn't it say something about those in the force? Having some of them belonging to an organisation that had you blindfolded and one trousers leg rolled up and one breast bared in an "initiation" ceremony was bad enough. But to have some of them professing faith in some religion that came out of a film? I mean, can you beat that! Are they trying to take the mick? If you did that with one of them, you would be in the nick.
