I saw them once and cannot find any info on them now. Who makes them, are they any good? I have an older home (built in 1922) and would like to cool the halls and maybe exhaust the heat into the attic any thoughts short of central air and window units?

Are you asking about ductless heat pump/air conditioners?
Carrier and Mitsubishi make them, as well as other companies. There is no duct work in the home, just a small unit about the size of a suitcase on the inside and outside of the home and piping to connect the two. They are good for one or two rooms, and newer models can connect up to three indoor units with one outdoor unit.

You will want to exhaust the heat to the outside of the home, not the attic. The unit can be placed on the roof, if you have issues with the small unit on the ground.
