What religion do you think is better? I have went to both and I am leaning more toward the Catholic side as being better. More people that I know that are Babtist like to judge people and say who is and who is not going to hell. One rule I believe is good to follow is never go to a church that tells you who is going to go to hell. They don't know and they can not make that decision. I think it is a scare tatic to try to get you into there church. Catholics worldwide are about 20 times more bigger then Babtist are. I don't want to be critical of Babtist just the ones who are like the people who are the Christian Right.

You are asking a question of monumental proportions. Which faith is better? As a Baptist I would have to say that we follow a closer interpretation of the Bible than do the Catholics. Although it would be hard to find any two Baptist who believe exactly the same thing, since we believe that each believer is capable of coming up with a reasonable way to look at and interpret scripture.

We tend to hold the Bible as the Highest Authority where the Catholics hold the Pope as God's representative on earth.

I could do a lot of writing and lay out an eleborate argument for Baptists and against Catholics, but I feel that I would be better served by saying that there are many sites on the internet that will compare the beliefs with scripture references and history lessons.

Look at the article on Baptists in Wikipedi and do the same for Catholics. This would be a good start to understanding the differences without having to read too much.

I would agree with you that there are some Baptist Churches that do engage in scare tactics and are very much involved with the Republican Party. However, there are just as many churches who try their best to leave politics outside the church doors and go about being the best Christians they can be.

The real question you need to answer is are you going to heaven and how do you know it? I believe that you must realize that you are a sinner, know that sin causes death, and that Jesus died for your sins and then resurrected after the third day thus conquering death and hell. You must repent of your sins and ask Jesus to save you and be your lord. Once you have prayed to Jesus to save you, then you are free to worship at whatever Church you wish without having your soul in jeopardy.

In response to Joe, the non-denominational Christian......Catholics WROTE the Bible dude! Back in the 400's AD! So if you're following God's word and God's word only, you're also following Catholicism. You may interpret certain verses differently, however. Catholics take the "Peter be the rock of my church" verse as, be the leader of Christians on Earth (ie. the first Pope). Anyway, if you haven't picked it up yet, I'm Catholic, and am very happy with my religion. I like the traditions, I like that we are the original Christians, and I like Masses. The end.

Rather than asking any person which denomination is better, I urge you to read your bible. Then you can compare the teachings of any church you attend with it. The closer to what the bible teaches, the better your understanding of God will be, and that's the church you want to attend. Because that church will help you draw closer to God.

Any person, regardless of denomination is not ever supposed to walk around telling people they are going to hell. What a very sure way to turn people away from God! But there are people from all kinds of denominations that behave this way! When the bible says, "Judge right judgment", it means to judge between good and bad. Right and wrong. But God alone is the Righteous Judge over all the earth. And it is to Him to decide about hell, not us.

Over and over, the bible exhorts us "Little children, love one another. For love is from God." Loving someone is what makes a person want to know the God we say we know. Condemnation only brings condemnation! And sometimes fear. But never hope! We are supposed to have this hope within us both sure and steadfast where Jesus has entered into the veil for us, and ever lives to make intercessions for our failings, and our trials. To appeal to our loving God for help, and to show back to us the help and love our Father has for us. We are supposed to be reflections of that same Jesus! We are supposed to be like Him.

A bigger congregation isn't a proof of a more righteous congregation. The only thing that should be proof of the right congregation to be a part of should be the Word of God, and your own heart. Where will you find the real Jesus? The kindhearted, loving, forgiving savior of the gospel. Wherever you find Him best represented, that's where you should go.

None. Their teachings are not according to the bible. You don't just want to pick a religion. You need to search through the bible. The bible says that the identity of true religion is love. So you have to ask...do the catholics or the baptists practice love? The catholics were supporting Hitler in WWII. They both go and kill people in war...maybe kill even their own fellow believers in war. Paedophlia and sexual abuse cases are abundant in religions. So you have to know what the bible says, pray to God to help you find the true religion. But you have to be open minded afterwards and search out the true religion. You will find it.

The truth of the matter is, every religion is going to have the people who do nothing but judge others. However, if you can look past the steriotypes, you will find the basis of all religion is the same. Yes, the gods have different names, but the ideals are all the same. Pick the one that brings you peace and happiness. That is what God, Allah, Buddah, or whomever, wants for us. Just ask yourself "What do I believe in my heart?"
A higher power will talk to you, if you listen. I promise.

There are wonderful people in both churches, but meeting wonderful people isn't the main purpose of a church. Hearing the truth is the purpose of a church. Considering that the Catholic Church is historically the one Church founded for Jesus Christ for all mankind, and the only Church authorized by Him; and considering that the Catholic Church has divine assurances of truth, having been told by Christ "whatsoever you bind upon earth is bound in heaven"; "he who hears you hears Me"; "the Holy Spirit will guide you to all truth; And considering that the Catholic Church has faithfully proclaimed the fullness of Christian truth for 2,000 years; and considering that the various Baptist churches (they don't all agree with one another) are part of the doctrinal chaos of Protestantism; and that such churches exist in direct violation of the stated will of God, "that they all may be ONE"; and that such churches teach a mix of genuine Christian truth and modern traditions of men invented by their various human founders, there is little doubt as to which Church the Holy Spirit would lead you to if you are listening to Him.

Believe in God and Jesus. Not religion. Religion is just protocol and politics.

Thast having been said, I would have to say that almost any mainstream protestant denomination is better than catholicism, because of the idolatry in catholicism.

I know good people who are catholics, but praying to anyone other than the lord is wrong. And the tradition of confessing sin to the priests was taken from pagan religions, and incorporated into catholicism. Many unscrupulous clergy in the past used the information gathered in the confessional to blackmail and manipulate the very people who they were supposed to be helping.

One needs to confess their sins to the Lord himself and ask forgiveness...NOT to a clergyman.

EDITED TO ADD:
arcanum70, you forgot the rest of the joke:

What's the difference between a catholic and a baptist?

The catholic will say hi to you at the liquor store.

The baptist will say hi to you at the brothel.

Catholics are not exactly known for their tolerance either. That being said perhaps this question may help: What's the difference between a Baptist and a Catholic?

The Catholic will say hi to you in the liquor store.

Thank you very much, I'll be here all week...try the veal.

Have you read the Bible ? Since this is a religious choice doesn't that seem like the first thing to do ?After you read the Bible from beginning to end (the NIV please simply because it's easier to understand) Then you could ask yourself these questions . Does this religion encourage reading the Bible ? Do they encourage you to develope a close personal relationship with Jesus ? Do they encourage you to seek your own answers by finding them in the Bible ? The Bible is God's word . You shouldn't let someone else tell you what is in it . Find out for yourself . Pray and let God lead you .

Neither is better. Get your answers from God, not a congregation or preacher, and make sure whatever church you find is going straight by the Bible - the whole thing, not just certain verses out of context. Man (religion) will always fail, but true Christianity (following Jesus) is true love.
