Why do some people on here type "G-d" and not God? Did I miss something?

In some faiths (for example mine, Judaism) we are not to write out the name of G-d 1. out of respect and 2. also in case it should be damaged. G-d is not a 'Name' of G-d but in Judaism we have a concept where we go the extra step in a commandment in order to make sure we're following it fully. We write G-d to show respect and to also make sure the Name of G-d is never erased or destroyed.

It's not a stupid question. Thanks for asking and not assuming, like all the people above me.

To some people typing out God is just something that they shouldn't do. Using the name in vain, etc.

It's not like you can't tell what they mean.

It is a Jewish thing. Apparently they are not allowed to type the full name of God, because it would be disrespectful, or taking God's name in vain.

I hate using - * &#$# or whatever. It makes it impossible to know what one might be trying to say. Especially when multiple letters are omitted. However, in the case of G-D, it just looks phucking retarded.

It's better to just throw it out there. If someone gets pissed, that's their problem.

But if anybody does ever have a problem with certain words that come out, I just tell them to quit being such a beotch and not to be such a phucktard.

That comes from a misapplication of the commandment not to take the Lord's name in vain.

Apparently some people feel that typing G-O-D would amount to blasphemy. (Hey, 2 each his own)

This is the same type of superstition that caused the divine name, most accurately rendered as Jehovah, to stop being pronounced by the Jews.

Well for some reason--unknown to me--people think that typing the word God when they are referring to the Almighty is a sin.

Their is a Jewish law that one should not erase the name of God.

This a custom transferred to the spelling of God in other languages.

As such many Jews write G-d instead of God to avoid writing the name altogether.

I can't say I've ever seen that. But I can easily enough
picture it. It is obviously something that would only be
done by an atheist. (And it's also only like to be done
if the person uses the word "damn" or, even worse...
"f*ck you.") That sort of thing.
Personally, I am an atheist--but I'm not the sort who'd
tell someone they should believe in God.
Enough said.

The name of God the Father is considered so holy by some Jews that they cannot speak or write the name in its entirety.

It may be from non-believers who do not want to give God the glory.
I do not capitalize satan's name at anytime because I don't even want to glorify him with a capital letter.
It's just our own preferences, if I am right on this.
