First of all, rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease in which your immune system attacks the cartilege of your joints and causes it to degenerate resulting in deformities of the joints and moderate to severe pain to the point of being crippling or debilitating. There are several treatments available, however. It can strike people of all ages but is more common in the elderly. I've never heard of it occurring in a dog, and to put your mind at ease, it is not contageous from one person to another either.

There is a type of arthritis that people and dogs share however. It is not contageous either. It's called osteoarthritis and occurs when joints just wear out with overuse and age. It is not as disfiguring as the rheumatoid type, but it too can be very painful. If you suspect that you or your dog have arthritis, see a doctor and/or vet for possible treatment. Good luck to you and your dog, and feel better.

Dogs can have arthritis, but arthritis is not a communicable disease. People can't pass it on to one another much less dogs.
