do you need a special mattress, and if so how are the foam types... thanks

Platform beds are great because some of them come with storage underneath. You use a normal mattress. If you don't want to spend a lot of money on a platform bed, try buying bed raisers. They are $10 for a box of four from Target. They raise your bed frame so you have extra storage underneath. I'd recommend a platform bed in an urban or modern design plan for a room.

You do not need a special mattress, the platform takes the place of the box spring. You will not even know the difference; and this is how most of European beds are made.

We had those beds for years. The old style had just a board for the base,I think some of the newer styles have springs. Either way, a foam mattress will be best.
