It's between pride and desire. Everything else fits into these. It CAN be, but this will never be the case.
To people who say it is Satan, start thinking for yourselves. We are all capable of "evil" because we have "free will." To put the blame of evil on something else is irresponsible and foolish.

The root cause of evil is religion. Without religion there exists no evil. Every action taken by a human being is a well adapted and somehow useful ability, or else we wouldn't have it this far into our species' life span. Even if you don't agree with something(i.e. rape, murder, theft, "cheating") there is a purpose for it, even if the purpose isn't quite as useful as it once was.
Can it be eradicated? Yes, in a sense. If people stop adhering to the idea of "evil" to begin with, it could simply drop off the face of the planet in the blink of an eye. Will it ever happen? Nope, humans like to label things, and we need a catch-all word to describe things that are "wrong" and things we don't understand or particularly like.

At the deepest level the root of all evil is Maha-maya. Beyond that we get into the realm of God. After Maha-maya is the false ego or ahankara.
For everyday affairs there are evils we commonly complain about. We may complain about dishonesty and poor ethics in business. Or we can talk about violent crime locally and internationally. Other evils may be due to nature's little probs such as disease especially the kind we cannot cure. Just the prospect of death is a type of evil in that we all have to die even if we live to be 150 years old. All of these evils can be traced back to the two mentioned above somehow or other. The two above mentioned are Maha-maya and Ahankara.
Maha-maya is the grand illusion of this material existence.
Bhakti Yoga is offering hope for an end to evil through mantra meditation and the guidance of Guru, Sastra and Sadhu. To find out more check the links provided.

The root of all evil is the same as the root of all good. Everything, including good and evil, comes from the same source. We cannot know good unless we experience evil. And we cannot know evil unless we experience good.
You know something hurts because you have known a state of no pain. So, you can compare pain with no pain. An on that note you can also see the difference between no pain and pleasure.
Evil can be avoided when we reach a certain level of experience and knowledge of good and evil. When we get tired of evil, we will live in a way that evil will not be present in our lives. This can be refered to as evolution. For example, the current state of the world is full of evil. Most peopleon Earth are still accepting the presence of evil in their lives, mostly because they don't believe they are suffering, although many of us do know we are suffering due to the faulty sytems of global organization under which we live. So the great majority of people don't do anything to change their lives in order to exclude evil. Let's hope the masses get tired of evil soon.
However, evil on the whole cannot be erradicated because it is part of existence. There is darkness and clarity. There is in and out. There is life and death. There is heavy and light. There is dense and subtle. So, there is good and evil. It's the ancient concept of yin and yang. If you got rid of one, you'd get rid of the other one too and consequently you get rid of the whole enchilada. And getting rid of the whole is a pretty unimaginable concept. It would be the concept of nothingness. And let's not get into that, because who knows where existence started or where it ends. All we know is "the here and now" and "the as far as we can see or remember".
Everything in existence without exception, including the presence of evil, depends on timing, on synchronicity and on decision. So, the question is when will evil stop being present among the people living on this planet at present? When will everyone agree that we have had enough evil? When will things change on planet Earth? When will evil be a thing of the past on this planet? Maybe 2012?

What I believe to be the root cause of evil is intolerance. Intolerance leads to greed, bigotry and so many other sins toward each other. And much to my dismay, I do not see it being eradicated during my lifetime. But, your question says "Can it be eradicated?" and yes, I believe in some enlightened future people could become open minded. Imagine.
Peace be with you.

The root causes of evil evolved in this order:
Envy, Arrogance, Anger, Lust, Greed.............etc..
These are only a few of the dark qualities
Evil has taken form in man, through the above qualities.
It can be removed from man, through prayer and devotion.
The removal can be achieved only if Gods qualities are allowed into man to replace the dark qualities of evil.
The evil we see in the world however will be eradicated by God. As mankind in general denies the existence of God, as we see developing today, emissaries from God will be
allowed to return and deal with the attempted destruction of both man and planet earth.
"May Gods Unlimited Grace protect us one and all."

According to the Bible, the LOVE of money - not the money itself, is the root of all evil. It can only be eradicated if all turn away from the love of money. What kind of chance do you give that of happening?

knowledge.... Can't be eradicated because one will not change it view for mankind....
lack of knowledge of oneness ----One will not change its view and see that no matter the religion, we are all the same( with this the evilness of war no-longer exist.)
gain of knowledge of globe warming--- all the signs of globe warming are out there, with scientific proof, but what are we doing? There are still others who are saying it cant be and wont try to change for the sake of man kind.
either way, knowledge the root cause of evil.

Ambition.
We have and had everything we could ever need. Why do we want more? Ambition is not so bad until it becomes a contest and we are willing to demolish our neighbor for his land because we want more of everything and to be better at everything.
I believe it was ambition that rooted the evil in man
