Irish Wolfhounds are wonderful. I wouldn't mind getting one someday (when I have the room, lol). My other favorites are German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Doberman Pinscher, and Mastiff. My husband wants a Bullmastiff. Right now we have a Black Mouth Cur mix that we *used* to think was a Lab mix. He's so wonderful that I've started reading up on other dogs in the cur/mountain hunting family, and I would really like a Mountain Feist someday. They're a smaller breed of dog, which is unusual for me:) I also like Huskies, Border Collies, Golden Retrievers, Pembroke Welsh Corgis (my parents have two)....oh, there are more, lol. Oh, Canaan dogs look awesome. I think Akitas are neat, too....but I think I've covered my favorites so far.
Basically, I like larger dogs with intelligence and stamina.

I love Irish Wolfhounds. Everytime I go to a dog show, there's always a bunch of Irish Wolfhounds lying around with toddlers sleeping on their stomachs. It's definitely a dog I'll be looking into once I get too old for a high-active breed.
My favourite dog breed is Belgian Shepherds, preferably Tervueren or Groenendal. They are not a dog for everyone, and it's not an "easy" dog, but I like them for so many reasons.
It's quite a healthy breed, especially if you are a bit careful when picking a breeder (check for HD and epilepsy, plus temperament, don't let anyone tell you a Belgian Shepherd is supposed to be a high-strung, anxious or nervous).
I love their intensity, their intelligence, their watch- and guard dog instincts, and their agility - seeing a Belgian Shepherd in motion can be sheer beauty.
I also love the way they'll challenge you - a Belgian Shepherd is intelligent and a fast learner, but it's not a "pleaser-dog" and you will need a good deal of dog knowledge and humour to handle them, but you'll never be bored, and it's a great dog for a variety of dog-sports, tricks, service-dog functions, and competition level obedience.
And while they are great cuddlers with their families and friends, they are not over-friendly or over-clingy - that's all a matter of my personality of course, but it's one of the reasons a Golden Retriever is not a dog for me (lovely dogs, but too happy. *grin*).

Ah, I've always loved Irish Wolfhounds and Deerhounds. They are so pretty. :)
However, I would have to say an Australian Kelpie. I own a mix, and he is intelligent and an all around generalist on our farm. He does everything from herding, guarding, and protection, but at the same time has such a loving temperament towards everyone and other dogs.

Chow-Chows.
They are loyal, beautiful, and will protect you.
If you are looking for a mid to larger size dog, this is your bet.
Make sure you meet your pet's parents beforehand, however. Traits tend to run in the family. Some Chows are very offish and not friendly.
They tend to take after their mothers.
Chows were bred in China to be fighting dogs, so if you want a dog as protection, a Chow is your baby. They will kill anybody who tries to hurt you.
Chows are rather large dogs and eat a lot, so take that into consideration, especially if you have a small abode.
They are great companions and very smart.
Good luck.

Definately the bullmastiff. We have 2 A fawn ***** and a brindle male. We also own 2 maltese x shitsu. The bullmastiffs is brilliant with our 3 daughters, great gaurd dogs. I definately would trust these guys with the kids before i would trust the the little ones, as they tend to be quite snappy.
I would also prefer a male bullmastiff than the female.

It is a tie between pitbull, english bulldog, doberman, and australian sheperd. When I grew up with these types of dogs (my family members and my parents love dogs) these are the breeds that I liked the best because I like their loyalty, ability to want to learn, and their love that they show. I know all dogs show love and are great but these breeds just seem to be my fav. And plus they are beautiful! Not to mention that they are wonderful with children if raised properly....with love!

Pembroke Welsh Corgi. They are beautiful, smart, loyal and funny. They are not a real popular dog in the US and when I take mine out for a walk or to the beach, people stop me and ask questions about her and talk about how pretty she is. I have met several people who later became friends because she attracts so much attention. I wouldn't take a million dollars for her.

By far, my favorite is the Border Collie. They're smart intelligence-wise and also smart-looking. I especially like the black and white coloring. They're the perfect size too, not too big and not too small. I've never had a dog before, but when I get one it'll be a Border Collie.
