so, my mom has this acoustic guitar. some times i like to sorta' 'fiddle' with it i guess lol. my point is, i really want to learn how to play. i have since i was about 10 years old. i honestly would rather not have a tutor but if i def. need one, i'll get one. have any of you guys learned by teaching yourself?? i'm a girl who likes to teach herself and i tend to learn better that way. my sister was trying to teach my the piano and i freaked out on her because i like to do it "my way". lol but when she left me to do it by myself that night...i understood it and could play a song. MAIN POINT: would it be hard for me to teach myself or should i just get a tutor?? thanks & sorry if i'm a bit "blah blah BLAH". lol

A lot of people teach themselves. Get a book that teaches you from the start, preferably one that has a CD in the back of it. There are plenty of them on the market. Go to a place like Sam Ash, they have a better selection of books, and ask the clerk to find you one for the style that you want to play. If not, go on the web, there are tons of sites where you can go to get beginner books, even lessons. Just type in learning the guitar or starting guitar. Just make sure that you follow the rules of playing, like holding your hands correctly, if not later on you'll see that you won't be able to play the things you want to because your hands have not been trained right, and it's a lot harder to have to go back and correct your bad habits. example, hole your left thumb in the back of the guitar neck, not over it. Good luck, it's something that I've done for years and it has given me great pleasure, your never bore, there's always something that you want to learn. Lots of luck. And remember your hands and fingers are going to hurt for a while, but don't give up, that goes away, especially after you develop callouses.

i've been playing guitar for over 45 years, & I'm self taught. Assuming ur mum keeps it in tune? Does she have any books of chords? If not , get one & learn 2 or 3 to start with. A D E are good. It will hurt at first, but the pain soon wears off! Use a plectrum to strum with. Going to the Zoo is easy so is He's Got the Whole World in his hands.Ur mum might have books of songs as well. U can always ask her advice if u get really stuck. Hope this helps, and best of luck. U can do it.

Okay.. Here's the thing. There are self-taught guitarists and a lot of them are very talented. But they did not become that way by sitting alone practicing all by themselves for hours on end. The key to becoming an accomplished self-taught guitarist is to interact with other guitarists.

Lessons are great if you can afford them... also if you have the time for them. But if you are like me, then guitar is one of those things you want to do to express yourself whenever you feel like it.... Even absolute beginner guitarists can learn to do that fairly quickly.

If you can learn to have fun and practice at the same time, you've won half the battle. The next step is to surround yourself with other people that enjoy doing the same thing. Don't limit yourself to your own ideas, but find some friends that you can bounce ideas off of. If you can learn to do both of those, then you'll be achieving something that many lesson-takers never achieve. That is self-gratifying guitar playing.

Learn how to love playing before you learn how to be good at it.

Well alot of the greatest players are self taught. Buy a beginners book from a local music store, or on amazon.com.. and get to work. If you have alot of difficulties going alone, then hire a teacher. Main thing is you have to stick with it, no matter how much your fingertips hurt at first, keep at it...if you want to play bad enough you will succeed! Have fun!!!

You can't fiddle with a guitar. You have to fiddle with a violin.
