It's the "Mark of the Beast", or the identifying sign of the Antichrist, who will come to Earth at the end of the world.
There are numbers that have Biblical significance, such as 3 and 7. There are 3 parts of God, Father, Son Holy Spirit. God created the world in 7 days, and so on... (You'll notice, in modern society, these are often considered "lucky #'s", although the significance is lost.)
The number 7 is a symbol of God's perfection.
The number 6, therefore, falls short of God. It represents imperfection--Man.
The Anti-Christ is supposed to be born as a man, just like Jesus was. He then will mark all of his followers with the # 666. If a person refuses to be marked, he will not be able to participate in society. Specifically, he will not be able to buy and sell. (This is the origin of the idea that money is the Devil's tool.) So basically, you join him or die.
There is also an idea that the Beast will be born in the 6th hour of the 6th day of the 6th month. This was misinterpreted last year as the the 6th day of the 6th month of the 6th year, and some kinda silly people used 06/06/06 as an excuse to call out from work...

The recent breakthroughs in medical implant chip technologies have increased interest in the "mark of the beast" spoken of in Revelation chapter 13. Here are some very interesting articles on the recent technological developments:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A29954-2004Oct13.html
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2005/01/17/nchip17.xml&sSheet=/news/2005/01/17/ixhome.html

It is likely that the technology we are seeing today represents the beginning stages of what will eventually be used as the "mark of the beast."
It is important for us to realize that a medical implant chip is not the mark of the beast. The mark of the beast will be something given only to those who worship the antichrist. Having a medical or financial microchip inserted into your right hand or forehead is not the mark of the beast. The mark of the beast will be an end times "mark" required by the antichrist to buy or sell - and - given only to those who worship the antichrist.
The main passage in the Bible that mentions the "mark of the beast" is Revelation 13:15-18. Other references can be found in Revelation 14:9,11; 15:2; 16:2; 19:20; 20:4. This mark acts as a "seal" for the followers of antichrist and the false prophet (the spokesperson for the antichrist). The false prophet (the second beast) is the one who causes people to take this mark. The mark is literally placed in the hand or forehead, and is not simply a card someone carries.
Many good expositors of Revelation have differed widely as to what exactly the mark of the beast is. Besides the "ID card" view, others have speculated that it is a microchip, a barcode that is tattooed into the skin, or simply a mark that identifies someone as being faithful to the antichrist's kingdom. This last view requires the least speculation, since it does not add any more information than what the Bible gives us. In other words, any of these things are possible, but at the same time they are all speculations, so we will just have to see how it turns out. We shouldn't spend a lot of time speculating on the details since that is as far as the Bible goes.
The meaning of 666 is a mystery as well. Recently, many people speculated that there was a connection to June 6, 2006 - 06/06/06. However, in Revelation chapter 13, the number 666 identifies a person, not a date. Revelation 13:18 tells us, "This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number. His number is 666." Somehow, the number 666 will identify the antichrist. For centuries Bible interpreters have been trying to identify certain individuals with 666. Nothing is conclusive. That is why Revelation 13:18 says the number requires wisdom. When the antichrist is revealed (2 Thessalonians 2:3-4), it will be clear who he is and how the number 666 identifies him.

I recently read a book I would highly recommend that answers all kinds of questions about 666. It's called "666 the mark of America Seat of the Beast, The Apostle John's Revelation Unfolded."

In the last days, when Satan is cast down to the earth, he will raise up a confederation of nations and out of this will emerge an evil world leader referred to as the Antichrist (also referred to as the Beast, although sometimes the Beast refers to his government.) He will somehow be identified with the number 666, which in the Greek is more literally six hundred, sixty and six. Names both in Hebrew and Greek have numeric equivalent, as letters of the alphabet are assigned a numeric value. for example, A=1; B=2; K=10, etc;
so likely the name of the person who will emerge as the Antichrist will have a numeric value of 666.
Read the 13th chapter of the Book of the Revelation, as this is the only passage in the Bible where this fact is disclosed.
Incidentally, for all the self appointed experts out there, NO recent or ancient translator accepts the reading 616, and this is only found in one Greek manuscript.

It's supposed to be the sign of the devil. However, in judaism, 3 sixes would be 18, meaning...life, and something good.
It's a number. Something tells me if I see the devil, I won't need 666 marked on it to know that its the devil. Similarly, 18 doesn't do much for me either.

Comes from the book of revelation however as someone stated it was actually 616 but later changed to 666, it's all apocalyptic writing and has nothing to do with Satan or evil and the like as fundamental christians like to promote it, nor is it some future telling puzzle
Look up apocalyptic writing before wasting precious time on books about prophesy

7 is the number of gods completness. 6 is just shy. so 6 is considered incomplete. 666 does not specifically mean the devil, but means the ultimate incompletness of gods standards. so it is commonly used to describe the devil

Six hundred and sixty six is the number of the beast. The Bible says that whomever can figure out what this means can stop Satan in his tracks.
