I've found that the best way to avoid deception is to use both your heart and mind to learn things. I study the Old and New Testaments, and other scriptures using an open heart and an open mind.
One of the challenges in understanding the scriptures is the prevalent use of symbols. While it can be a very powerful teaching technique, it does require study.
It's also impossible to fully understand the things of God without His help. We must do what we can do and then ask for help on the rest. Of course this won't work if we're determined to behave in ways that drive the Spirit away.

Yes, they are missing the point, but that's no reason not to read the Old Testament. There is still much to be gained there. Jesus didn't come to say the Jewish relgion was over, but he came to redefine it back to what it was supposed to be. The Jewish religion was based on salvation through the sacrifice of the Lamb. The sacrificial system that was in place point forwards to the sacrifice of Jesus, the Lamb of God. Most Jews however had gotten/fallen away from that idea after they were exiled and became very legalistic and "built a fence around the law" to make sure that they wouldn't break it, and then lost the spirit of the law. Jesus came to fulfill the law, not to abolish it. And btw, the word for new in the description of New Testament is more accurately renewed. think about that one for a while.

It's God's Word. From God. If you believe in God, believe in His Word. You can't believe in God if you don't believe in the Bible. In today's society, everyone is brought up to believe whatever they want to believe. There are no morals anymore. For example, you are in Walmart. There's a camera that you would really like to have but don't have enough money. So-why not steal it? If you could get away with it, would you? Whose to say that stealing that camera is such a bad thing anyway?

You've touched on it.....but the fact is that this occurs at the local level.
Pastors define the Bible for their congregations, and claim interpretation outside of a narrow band of that is incorrect.

Never been told or even hinted at that I should not question, but just have faith. "repeatedly" ??. Of course, it is taught as truth, but no one says don't question it.

Why don't you stop stereotyping! Are you trying to show all those who are intelligent and discerning in here how ignorant you can be.
Chrisitianity is made up of "INDIVIDUALS" who all don't think exactly alike.
Open mindedness is something you need to learn so you can
talk to people with respect and genuine concern about what they believe.

Because if they questioned it, there would go faith. And faith is all they have when it comes to the bible.

I'm not sure where you get your information because my church encourages us to look into every aspect of not just our religion but others as well.
