I really would like to try to understand what the hub-bub is all about.

Atheism is considered a religion, so many capitalize it just as if you would capitalize Christianity, Buddhism etc. Now, before you jump my goat about Atheism not being a religion, consider this: Buddhism is considered a religion, but, because Buddhists do not believe in a god or goddess it is considered an atheist religion. Religion is belief, and atheists just happen to believe that there are no gods or goddesses.

Because Atheism has become a missionary religion that seeks converts. Go check out the "Rational Responders" and that whole web group. Make no mistake it is a religion and they are trying to turn us all into one of them. If this was not the case they would be content with that belief by itself and feel no need to heckle people of faith.

The lowercase "atheism" indicates a person's understanding of the nonexistence of God. The uppercase "Atheism" infers an organized movement of structured set of beliefs.

Some people mistakenly treat atheism like a religion and therefore consider it necessary to capitalize the word. As atheism is NOT a religion, there's no need to capitalize it.

If atheist/atheism is the beginning of a sentence it should be capitalized.

I don't think it should be capitalized. It's not a religion, after all. But then, I don't capitalize god or christian or jesus either - out of a lack of respect.
