Because Nirvana made a lot of money, and the music companies are using the same formula.
Music has been getting more and more formulaic ever since the music companies discovered they could make millions of dollars off of it back in the 1970's.

Because they all just try and fit to the style that people like at the time and are too lame to try something unique and different because they might not make enough money or become big and famous soo instead they all end up sounding the same. It's really annoying. No variety. Someone needs to step out of the box and give something new a try.
They sound like they're in pain because all they do is scream and probably because their ridiculously tight pants are crushing their crotch. Oh and because, you know, they're all so ANGRY! They have soo much to complain about.
I guess people like that noise...

I agree - they do sound like they're in pain. I think that it's too bad that rock artists have strayed from actually singing to simply yelling and calling it music. It makes a lot of rock music very generic. It can be difficult to find worthwhile rock music, but don't despair. When in doubt, refer to the classics!
I hope that this helped!

Oh my...
I totally agree.
Bands like Nickelback, and Seether [both who i can't stand] are such complete ripoffs of anything good.
They sound exactly like the singer from Bush.
Who i am sure copied off somebody else.
It is truely pathetic. There is no originality in mainstream rock music. Everyone in that scene is just in it for the money.
Quite sad, really.

Because they're all copycats.
And they're not original at all.
And they try to be different.
But they really aren't.
