Hi there,

For all you UK residents or traveller... I just wanted to know... what is the cheapest way for me (as I will be backpacking) to travel the following routes:

1. London to Oxford
2. Oxford to Bath
3. Bath to Cardiff
4. Cardiff to EdinburghI

I'm thinking probably the train, but what train companies are cheap, also, is there a flexipass of some sort that will give me a discount for travelling multiple times like this?

Thanks, any help is appreciated...

What about driving? I'm thinking of "setting camp" in Bath and then driving down to Stonehenge/Salisbury for a day trip. Is it worth renting a car? I'm 23 years old and have had a perfect 6 1/2 year driving record in Australia.

I went to the UK from america and bought a "BritRail" pass...pretty cheap and you can customize it to your travel plans... the best part is once you validate it, you are responsible for filling in the dates you use it, I cheated and used an eraseable pen...i only had four days on the pass but I used it about twice a month for a 6 month period...people dont use them that often except tourist, and most of the people checking tickets had no idea what it was so they just let me be!

The cheapest way would most likely be the train, http://www.nationalrail.co.uk, however, as stated, you're plans need to be pretty set in stone because it's really expensive to buy a ticket day-of. I got a Liverpool-London ticket for 12 pounds a month in advance... and paid over 60 for a ticket from Edinburgh to York day-of.

Again, check out nationalrail.co.uk, they link to all the railway providers and can help you out with a "flexipass" of sorts.

London - Oxford you can do on MEGABUS http://www.megabus.com/uk

The others train will probably be cheapest as long as you book tickets several weeks in advance, that way you get huge savings, but are tied down to specific trains - I use http://www.thetrainline.com to get my tickets.

Booking a month ahead you can get Devon - Lake District for £22 each way, rather than the normal £97 each way.

if you are under 26 you can get the young persons card that gives you 30% of trainfares. there is also one for the national express buses. the buses are half the price but take twice as long.

try - www.thetrainline.co.uk

this gives you the cheapest prices for all the train companies. the national express buses have a site too - www.nationalexpress.com

Your thinking right!
Buy an open ticket to travel anywhere in Great Briton. Better to do it that way because even well made travel plans can change overnight.
Enjoy your trip.

Cheers!
