Where did this craze come from? Where did it originate? What does it represent? Diamonds are the new sparrows and I don't understand how this happened!

I must have missed this memo...diamond's have become the new sparrows? Since when?
Seriously I must be under a rock because I've yet to see someone come in the shop I work in and get a tattoo of a diamond (or even anything that looks remotely similar) and I'm there 12 hours a day, 5 to 6 days a week.
