It all depends on what you would like to do with. If your planning to get into huntin you would want a cenerfire rifle, as it affords larger more powerful calibers to choose from which will give you more range and accuracy. But if you are wanting to shoot for pleasure and fire alot of rounds the rimfire would be the better option as the ammunition is cheap and has virtually no noticeable recoil. It can also be used to hunt some small game as rabbits and squirrels. Calibers in the rimfire will probably be limited to .22 or .17. Hope this helps.

Today, rim fire is restricted to low power cartridges like the .22s. A hundred and fifty years ago, before black powder was replaced by smokeless, the pressures were low. This allowed the relatively weak rim fire cartridges to be used in large bore rifles.
Besides the fact that rim fire casings cannot stand up to high pressures, they are not practical to reload (but not impossible, I have reloaded rim fire cases). Another factor is that rim fire cases could not be made without a prominent rim, which is not conducive to operation in semiautomatic actions.
So, if you are looking for inexpensive shooting, rim fires have the advantage. If you are looking for a high powered rifle, for hunting or long range target shooting, you need to go to center fire.

Get a Ruger Mini 14 or Ruger Mini 30 Ranch Rifles....... This is a great all around rifle... The 14 fires .223 ammo and the mini 30 shoots 7.62x39MM...... Ammo is way cheaper than most other centerfire cartridges..... .22 cartridges are rim fire - meaning the firing pit hits the rim of the bullet, very underpowered..... Centerfire is what most higher powered cartridges use. They have a center primer cap that sets the gunpowder off and fires the bullet.....

All depends on what you prefer and what you intend to shoot. Rim fire rifles are mostly if not all small caliber rifles used for target shooting and small game hunting. Centre fire rifles come in a lot of larger calibers mostly used for hunting big game. Rim fire rifles are normally cheaper and ammo is cheaper as well.

Currently, only small calibers .22 and below are made in rimfire. They will do for cheap plinking or small game hunting at close range. Rimfires were invented before centerfires. Once, rimfires were made up to .56 caliber, e.g. the Spencer repeater used in the Civil War. Now, there is a much better selection of centerfire cartridges. I use them for woodchuck to elephant.

Well, what excatly are you asking? the better one would be a centerfire, those have more accuracy, more speed, and usually more stopping power. Those are your 30-06, 308, 270, and all of those. A rimfire is a .22, and a 17, and is alot weaker and is only good for small gamer like squirrels and up to foxes.

Rimfire rifles are basically utilitarian guns limited in their ability to take large game. They are not usually legal for anything other than varmints, vermin and punching paper or cans. So if you're going to dispatch a venomous snake you're better off with a .22 Long Rifle than a .30-06. If you're hunting deer, elk or moose you're better off with the '06.

Rimfires are generally small caliber and good for plinking or very small game. They are generally very cheap to buy and shoot (exceptions include olympic target pistols which can easily be in the thousands) and a lot of fun. Center fires can be very small caliber or very large are generally more expensive and have more recoil but that's very general. Do you have a specific use in mind?

It really depends on what you want to do. If you just wanna shoot, the .22 long rifle round is loads of fun, and really cheap! For small game hunting, (anything smaller than a coyote) the .22 is just right.
For competition, you can use the .22 for bullseye competition, but most other competition, you'll need a centerfire. For "combat" or "action" shooting competition, you'll want a 9mm, as they are relatively cheap to shoot, and have relatively low recoil.

A Shooter will have both.. One for one purpose and the other for another purpose.. One is no better than the other.. It depends on what what you will be using it for, that is why you need both center fire and rim fire.........
