Most of those disorders start to show signs in the 20's to 30's.

Paranoid schizophrenia is usually exhibited between the years of 13 and 30 years of age.
By in large if you do not exhibit any mental illness after the year of 30 the most likely disease you could come down with is depression.
As for if schizophrenia is genetic - the jury is out on that : some studies show that if one of your parents suffers from the disease you have a 1/4 chance of inheriting it, while other studies tend to point to a disease that the mother incurred sometime during pregnancy, or a disease the infant caught early in live. still other studies show that mental illness can skip a generation.

There are some mental disorders that run in families, but remember children are very resilient, so even if they do have someone like for a parent, it doesn't necessarily mean that they will turn out to have it. It may affect them to an extent but if the child has healthy people also making a difference in their lives as well as positive teachers in school developing relationships with them, they have a very good chance of developing normally. Your question is like asking if a child's parent has Down's Syndrome or a parent who is mentally retarded - what are their chances of getting it and being affected by it? Sure, but unless they have the illness to begin with - there may be effects but really only to the extent that that individual spends alot of time with them and the child not having outside relationships. Children are very smart and resilient - we many times don't give them enough credit for that. I grew up with a brother who had schitzophrenia and my dad too - but I'm not psycho because of it. I always knew it was wacky and that other people weren't like that. Statistics show that most mental illnesses develop during the teenage years especially with individuals prone to depression.

I would think it would show up mostly in Adolescence. Theres a great chance you will be normal.
Tho I find it weird that my Biological Mother had Bi-polar disorder and my siblings that were adopted ended up having it also. While being raised with "normal" parents.
There may be a genetic link. I don't know enough to know it. I just suffer from Anxiety Disorder. And it became apparent when I was learning to drive. But I served in the military and went on with my life.
Good luck

the genetic mix is a 50-50 situation because there are two parents. The more children the parents produce the greater the likelihood that at least one or two will carry the same gene structure to cause the aberration. As for when a disease process becomes apparent, that is highly variable, the likelihood is strong that it will develop at the same rate as the parent, but there is no guarantee of that either.
