Since 9/11, you can go very few places without a passport. Get one - Europeans are so obsessed with the fact that so few of us have one - course we don't get 6 weeks of vacation like the europeans do, so we're alittle enslaved here - but you can up our average!
It takes a long time to get a passport. Act now.

You may be able to leave a country without necessarily having a passport. Problem is, you cannot get INTO another country without one.
So, let's say you want to visit Timbuktu. You leave the US without a passport, the plane taxis up to the airport in Timbuktu. You follow a line of passengers to customs. You are turned around and told you can't enter.
Now, you have no passport to enter Timbuktu - and no passport to return to the US. This is a serious problem.
At the unwise age of 16, give your parents credit for knowing a whole heckova lot more than you do. Listen to your father. Getting a passport may take as long as three to four months, so apply early.

First of all you should start listening to your dad. Learn to communicate with him to build trust and confidence.
Yes, your dad is right. You need a passport. No airlines will let you get on the plain without passport and visa to the country you are going to, if such visa is needed.

When I traveled to China the airline asked to see it before I got on the plane. But if I made past them, i would not have made it past immigration in China.
a passport is the only form of personal identification recognized around the world... you can't travel without it and you wouldn't want to.
