It's because words changed throughout history. That's like saying why don't we read the gh in eight ... why don't we just write rite instead of right?
It's just because that's how the word changed from another language to English.

You can actually search the word up and find its roots ... that might help u!

good luck!

To answer that, find the origin of the word. Virtually all of the words we use came from other languages. Those languages may have pronounced differently. French is a great example.

The English language is derived from Latin, Greek, and various other words from other root language that were picked up.

Take a few lessons, and find out why words are spelled certain ways.

"ph" is derived from a Greek letter which actually sounds like "P" with a lot of air behind it (kind of like "puhu").

Words which use "ph" for "f" are derived from the Greek language (eg "Photo" is from Greek "Phos" which means "light").

"f" is from Latin (and other languages). The words which use "f" are often from Latin such as "Fix" from Latin "fixus" which means "attached". OR from German like "finger" from the German word "finger" which means, believe it or not, "finger".

Hope this helps.

I want to give you the reward for the most original question. *sarcasm*

The English language is complicated. The way something is written isn't the way something is meant to be pronounced.
