All the information you will require to start home schooling, along with the rules and laws of your state can be found at
http://hslda.org
That being said, home schooling can be as inexpensive, or expensive as you would like it to be.
Although an option for some families, keep in mind that signing up for a virtual school where the public school provides all the materials is not home schooling, that is doing public school at home, and you will have to comply with their requirements, as well as annual testing.
Home schooling is where you, the parent, decide what your child will study, and when.
It gives you the time to concentrate on his/her strengths, and weak points.
A true individualized education can take place when home schooling, so to direct you to a curriculum is a bit difficult.
There are boxed, complete curriculum's; I do not use them; they are expensive, and way to prescriptive.
I would encourage you to do some research, and start only with the basics.
Keep in mind that most home school books/curriculum's are about a year or two ahead of public school, so depending on your child start with a 6Th/7Th grade level for the summer, and go from there.

You can find info on your state requirements at the HSLDA website.
If you can't afford to purchase a pre-packaged curricula or expensive text books or sign up for an umbrella school, you probably won't need to.
There is a pretty good book called, "How to Write a Low-cost/no-cost curriculum" that can get you started. There's also a great book called, "Homeschooling on a shoestring" and another called "Homeschool Your Child For Free" using mainly free internet resources.
The internet and the library are probably the best resources you'll find, and free. You can find all sorts of free worksheets, lesson plans, unit studies, etc. Just google whatever you want and loads of things will come up.

First you need to check your state's laws by clicking on the map at this website: http://www.hslda.org/Default.asp?bhcp=1
This website offers descriptions of various curriculum:
http://www.cathyduffyreviews.com/index.html
There are many different ways to homeschool, though. Some people use textbooks, some use work books, and some use nothing but library books. For lots of general information about homeschooling, you can check this website:
http://homeschooling.gomilpitas.com/
If you want to design your own curriculum Worldbook offers typical courses of study for each grade level at this website: http://www.worldbook.com/wb/Students?curriculum
Remember that homeschooling isn't just about book work like regular schooling. Take advantage of the time together to take fun and educational field trips, and remember that kids can learn a lot through playing.
Good luck!

There are a lot of ways to do it. Here is a web site to get you started.

I'm sure in your town or state they are required to provide resources to assist you in homeschooling. Your son may even be allowed to participate in extra-curricular activities at school. It is important that you keep him academically challenged and improving.
